Ducato Tool Box Security

All those with the new type Fiat check your tool box security below the passenger seat.

I had to make an emergency stop, fortunately I had no passenger.

The tool box, quite heavy, shot forward, when I checked the retaining gadget, a plastic peg that twists through 45 degrees, was not there. I found it later with the spring and it looked like the locking tabs had broken off.

I don't know how heavy the box is, but sounds like a safety issue if it broke lose under heavy braking, in an acident if would come forward with greater force, please report to VOSA if you think it may be problem.

The box is not heavy but the tools and jack that are in it are. My van does not have a spare wheel but was supplied with a jack and wheel nut spanner, these have been thrown out and box is now a usefull hidden locker.

ruper123,

1st time I ever used my Jack and wheel spanner was when I drove over a resurfaced road with loose stones. I did not go fast not wantmg to chip my precious new van and suddenly a squeal, very loud, from front wheel started. The only way I could get the stone out from between the brake caliper and the disc was to take the wheel off. So, maybe one day you might find despite not having a spare, the jack and spanner will come in very handy. Also if you do get a punture and have to wait patiently for break down services you can use the jack to get the van level while you have cups of tea.

Sounds like a safety issue if the box comes loose when braking hard and worth mentioning to VOSA.

For goodness sake Jon. I could carry a huge toolbox full of tools to try and cover every eventuality but I could still have an incident, as unlikely as the one you quote, I would not be able to deal with. All I carry is some duct tape and a couple of screwdrivers and just try and enjoy myself on holiday without constantly worrying that things might go wrong. No wonder some on here struggle with weight, just go through your van and throw all the rarely used junk out. Before anyone states the obvious, yes, if I had a spare I would carry a jack.
