oorgiz
What did you think compared to York, Ann and I arrived 24 hrs later than planned from the Thirsk direction about mid morn Sat, into a long que of traffic which turned out to be caused not by the show directly but the lights at the co-op junction, getting down the road to the show was a breeze (did you spot the bicycle cop with the speed camera) . We spent a few quid on bits and bobs, saw Clive on his mini bike, Dave at his stall (v. busy at the time) and enjoyed the excellent weather. We camped in the c&cc area where a few sticky fingered bar stewards visited during the night lifting some generators and anything else left out over night. We enjoyed the whole thing but didn't think the camping layout was a patch on the York style, with every one scattered to the winds, it was a long dark walk to the bars at night and the least said about the toilets the better(yuk). We left Sunday afternoon and got home 8 hours later (its a 4 hr trip) thanks to the RAC who came to our rescue at Soutwaite. And to the man in the white freight rover conversion who followed us through Pickering into the show site, when you pull out in front of other road users when they have right of way, hanging out the window to shout abuse and giving the finger does not appear in my highway code as best practice, no wonder some people just love to hate caravaners and motorhome drivers. oorgiz. maryowlgirl
We enjoyed the show and thought the organisers did a great job for the fist time. I would imagine they have plans to make things better next year but lets face it we all learn by our mistakes. The only thing I thought needed altering was getting to the entertainment venues as like you say it was very dark at night. If they leave they layout this way then busses should certainly be laid on the last one being half hour after the venues close giving people time to finish their drinks. I would pop the show farthest away from the venues with the camping in the centre - lets face it we all go to look at the vans and the trade stands through the day and nothing will stop us doing that and busses are laid on then. But I know several people that would have loved to go to the night shows but due to the fact that they were parked a long long way from the venues they did not go in case they fell. Regarding the thieving, do you know for certain that it was the bar stewards as I understand it some gypsies managed to get on site one night - perhaps it was them. malc d
Have another read of that Maryowlgirl - I don't think that Oorgiz was actually referring to the "bar stewards" ;-) ;-)

Mel B
I must admit I prefer York. We didnt' stay over at the show and wild camped at various venues (Scarborough, near Whitby etc, etc). At York we like to arrive on the Friday evening, find a nice little spot to spend the night, hit the massive car boot sale next to the show on Saturday morning, then peddle into York for the afternoon, especially as it co-incides with the food festival! :D Then we go into the show first thing on Sunday and have a good potter around before setting off for home around 5.00 pm. As Pickering is a bit out in the sticks, it meant that to do anything else you really had to use your 'van, hence why we didn't bother to stay nearby and just visited places one our way to and from the show so didn't get there until Sunday morning and left by Sunday tea-time. One thing I didn't think much of, and one reason why we didn't really contemplate staying on the show ground, was the high cost, we don't understand how it can be a 'free' night on Monday when the cost of attending had gone up so much from the previous year (or am I imagining it?). We didn't want to pay for the minimum period of Saturday night to Tuesday lunch, and then feel we had to stay to get our money's worth, ie do something that we didn't really want to do. I wish they'd instead kept the length of the show the same (and the cost down) and then in you wanted you could pay extra to stay on the Monday night, we might then have contemplated staying on site. davenewellhome
You must be a quick walker Mary, the Black Bull is 1 mile from Pickering! Last year we stayed at the site opposite the Black Bull and it took me at least 15 minutes brisk walk to get to Pickering. D.

Paul-
We liked York too, & I appreciate there are problems especially when the motorhome show is booked for a particular weekend & it could be canceled if race meeting is also booked at a later stage. Pickering wasn't ideal but it was a venue big enough to hold us all, a pity it was too far & dark to visit the beer marquee on a night, We were handy for the main Saturday evening show it’s just I couldn't bring myself to watch Des. We were discussing where the show could be held, Bering in mind a lot of folk came from up north, further north than me that is. Pickering is a pain to get to from the A1/ A64 end. What we came up with was the great Yorkshire showground. What's it like to get to from the north or south & would it be big enough to get everyone on.........is it sludgy. Does the showgoer staff have any idea if it would work? Paul
york brewery
Hi paul Im not sure how big the great yorkshire showground is?.but access is quite a bottle neck A59 junction 47 of A1 /A61/A59 Traffic clogs up at junction47 on A1 when big shows are held Tony
