colin weston
Now that the BBC have ceased to broadcast the World Service in Western Europe on short wave I have trouble getting my fix! Having visited the BBC web site they advise that reception can be obtained via the Eutelsat Hot Bird satellite. Is this the only option? I am visiting Spain (Malaga) for a few weeks in November without my van and wonder whether there are any Spanish stations that broadcast the World Service. When visiting Europe with my van I could take my TV which will receive digital TV and radio. What kit do I need to connect to this Hot Bird? Is there a beginners guide published anywhere? colin
Just had a quick look on my home set up, I have world service on Astra2, Astra1, and Hotbird, interestingly on Hotbird it is listed as WS Persian. To recieve these it is easiest to use a fta sat reciever. As a starting point look here http://www.satelliteforcaravans.co.uk/ Mainly about recieving UK TV but gives you some ideas
starvin marvin
So what are the choices now for listening to the World Service in Spain and Portugal? I have a TV in the van (fixed in) but the last thing I want is a satellite dish and all that stuff. I guess its going to mean buying a laptop and somehow or other listening over the internet. Peter Highe
Colin According to the BBC World website it is possible to listen to shortwave in Spain on the Central/West Africa schedule - the website has frequencies and programme guide. I have done this in the past and recently from the Canaries (but you would expect that). Worth a try? Peter
Guest JudgeMental
In Italy this summer I could not get sat to work because of trees. my Roberts world radio manged after some diligent and frustrating searching to pick up the world service on 2 different frequencies at different times of the day...The quality was terrible But it was a little news. It was only on checking website on my return that I learnt they had stopped broadcasting! So I believe I was picking up the Russian broadcast hence the poor quality *-) I am very disappointed with this decision to stop broadcasting! colin
Your question triggered an old memory, after investigation I found this. http://www.worldspace.com/maintenance/index.html So it appears there may be a free service availible at moment, and in future may be a full service but will require subscription p.s. forgot to say, these radios work similier to a normal radio p.p.s more info here http://www.worldspace-europe.com/index.html question is what will happen in present economic enviorment

Archiesgrandad
Before going on a wander round France this year I checked out the world service website and we picked up English broadcasts on 648 metres Medium Wave most of the time, with just a little transister radio. Guest JudgeMental
have always found once you head inland a bit you loose the medium wave broadcast
colin
Things are not looking good for Worldspace, so it looks like 'normal' sat radio or nothing :-( http://blog.wotsat.com/page/whatsat?entry=chris_forrester_s_big_issue6
