Spain & Portugal Road Atlas

Does anyone know where I can buy a Spain & Portugal road atlas at a

1:200,000 scale. My current Michelin one needs replacing but is at 1:400,000 which is not really detailed enough.

After my unhappy excursion at the Malvern Show (don't ask) I tried the map shop in Upton with no success, the best they could do was the same smaller scale. I know there is a larger scale available because I've seen another Brit m/homer in Spain with one.

Many Thanks

When I went a couple of years back I used an AA Road Atlas of Spain + Portugal which had a scale of 4.7 miles to the inch ( 3 km to 1 cm ) which we found quite adequate.

It also contained 59 city amd town maps plus a section on motorway exits.

Have checked the ISBN No. of the AA book and it is: 10.0.7495 4830 4

It's printed in Spain, and the Spanish edition is ISBN: 84-08-05954-8

It cost £15 and I think it came from W.H.Smith ( but possibly Waterstones).

Hi,

Mine is the same as Randonneur, the sticker on the back is Carrefour and the price e16,45 bought about 3 years back

If you can buy over there but you may wish to plan ahead.

If in London the National Map Centre.22/24 Caxton Street,London. SW1H 0QU. is map heaven. They may have a web site and they seem to cover the world.

Thanks for the replies.

I've tried my local WH Smiths who stock Spain & Portugal at 1:300,000 (1cm to 3kms) or in old money 1" to 4.7 miles. Published by the AA, ISBN 978-0-7495-5607-5, £14.99. There is another publisher at approx £9 (Smiths couldn't find the ISBN numbers suggested, not current I understand ) I've also checked this with Waterstones who confirm the same. Not as good as 1:200,000 but better than my current atlas, and also available in my preferred "hard" bound rather than those horrible spirals that fall to bits in no time at all.

Incidently The AA also publish a France atlas at 1:190,000!! priced at £11.99 which is a better scale than the old Michelin, of course the new michelin's now don't show the camp site locations with the triangle in a circle that linked to the michelin site book, so an AA atlas is fine.

So the upshot is WH Smiths have better scale atlas's than the Upton on Severn so called specialist map shop!! and certainly Waterstones who have the same atlas's told me they are not allowed to source, ie order from non UK companies!! There clearly can't be much of a demand in Upton for Spanish/Portugese atlas's which is surprising, as its generally under water!

I've found that the answer to any map problem is Stanfords who have stores in Covent Garden, Bristol and Manchester and are on line at:

www.stanfords.co.uk

I'm certain they'll have what you want, but you'll probably have to pay postage. Or you could try Amazon online.

Thanks Mel,

I tried Stanfords but they are no better than WH Smiths/Amazon for road atlases. It appears that 1:300,000 is the largest scale available in the UK.

I've now ordered one from Amazon as its £6 cheaper than buying at Smiths! Can't wait to be using it.

Thanks for the info from everyone.

Hi,

We used the Michelin Spain atlas last time we went that way but I agree it isn't as detailed as their France atlas. As we were only touring the Pyrenees region we bought a couple of large scale fold up maps in a large supermarket for a reasonable price.

I usually buy one or two large scale sheet maps locally in most European countries we visit especially if we are staying a few days at a site - being a "mapaholic":-D
