Motorhomeless

new to the game

After crash testing our beloved Hymer which flipped over and landed upright on the A1 coming back from hols in Europe, we are on the look out for another van. Ours was B574 just under 20ft which we found advertised on E-bay gave us quite a shock as we were still a bit raw obviously thats what happens with salvage. Anyway life goes on, we have been looking at Mercs particularly automatics, any views would be appreciated. :'(

Hi Elaine, sorry to hear about your ultimate test of the Hymer, glad you are alright and not been put off Motorhoming, must have been very scary for you. Have you looked through classified adds on the forum see if any leads there, we have the Hymer 584 that is also just under 6 meters so it may be another one to look at. All the best with your search. Carol.

Hi Elaine

Our last 2 MH's have both been merc' autos. We've also had the 5cyl manual. Both have been fabulous, with no judder as per fiat ect. Economy like all autos is not so good but a fine gearbox and smooth engine(3ltr). Really car'nt fault them. I do beleive the gearbox to be sweeter than our Bmw also with a 3ltr.

We were hit drivers side by a young girl in the overtaking lane, one minute we were on the road next we felt like we were in a giant washing machine tumbling over we ended up on the verge upright that's Hymers for you. We all walked away with minor injuries the young girl actually admitted she'd took her eyes off the road for a minute we wondered if she was on the phone? The traffic police couldn't believe we walked out, but it was sad to see our home which had took us to Corsica, Sardinia Lake Garda, Austria, Germany and France for 12 weeks transported via recovery to our home then to have to look at it every day for a week in such a state. The good thing is we have lots of happy memories and plenty photographs to remind us of the good times spent in the van.

Crikey!

We think that driving our big and heavy motorhomes would somehow make us a bit more imune from being pushed around by smaller vehicles!

What on earth was the young girl driving? If you say a KA then I'm reverting to walking everywhere....

Glad you're all ok. :-D

If she admitted that to the police they will be checking her phone records etc. If she was then at least that will help you with your insurance claim. have you had the go ahead from your insurance to start looking for a new van? If not it might be worth hanging on a bit just so you are sure just how much they are going to pay out. Just because you insure you van for an amount doesn't mean they are going to give you that amount without some sort of haggle!

The main thing is that no one was seriously hurt and you walked away.

Good luck for the future.

As the other driver was at fault and she admitted it, it should be her insurers that are paying out, not EM's.

I hope, therefore, that you'll get a good settlement and also something extra for all the upheaval etc.

Good luck with your search.
