Guest Tracker
Many parts of the River Loire valley and it's towns and villages are indeed an interesting and varied experience.
Basil
Can't beat the Alsace for a week. Quick run down the free motorway under a day from Calais then visit Strasbourg, Colmar, Mulhouse, Riboville. Obernau and the many picturesque villages, then back across to Calais on your last day. Loads of Municipals and free Aires in the Alcase. Bas
Patricia
If you are interested in history there are lots of places to visit around the Calais area (bloc hauses etc., the old town in Boulogne and the monument to Napoleon), around the Somme area (WWI trenches, Arras tunnels etc.), Dieppe (Chinese war cemetery), Caen (excellent museum), Bayeux (the tapestry) and all along that coast places to visit from the WWII landings (Pegasus Bridge and the landing beaches). Not forgetting the Cloth of Gold and the Agincourt Battle ground. There are many more too of course. Rouen has a very interesting old town - still visual evidence of WWII damage, several churches with links to Joan of Arc - and a bit further towards Paris is Monet's garden (maybe a bit late in the year for this). I think you will be back by All Saints' Day (1 Nov) but, if not, there is usually a lot of traffic on the roads at that time. There's also Paris too - loads to do there. If you want to visit museums many of them close on Tuesdays but some are opening evenings now, also many shops and restaurants close on Mondays. Philman
Mont St. Michel is well worth a visit. We have just returned from the Alsace region, we stayed at Obernai Municipal, one of our favourite sites. Free wifi. There are so many mediaeval villages just a short drive away. Obernai itself is a really pretty town with several large supermarkets. Phil.
jo scott
We had forgotten how lovely Normany / Picardy are till we came through recently. St Valery en Caux (good quayside arie, but get there early) delightful port; St Valery sur Somme even better. Home to Jean d'Arc, medieval towers, good walk along the estruary, boat trips for birdwatching, steam train around to neighbouring Le Crotoy. Again a very good aire at the top of the town for 6 euro. For chatueax, try Villandry (stunning ornamental gardens) and nearby Annecy. We also stayed over night in Le Touquet . . two aires to choose from. In Belgium: definitely Ghent. University town so lots going on. Good restaurants; musuems, canal side walks. We stayed at Blaarmenster Campsite, (see our travel site www.weareontheroadagain.co.uk) a 20 minute bus ride, or a 40 minute pleasant canal walk into town. Have fun! jo n jon
