How do you measure TV screens?

Don't say "with a tape-measure.." :-D

I seem to remember, from the dim and distant past, that a TV screen is measured diagonally, not side-to-side. So a TV advertised as 22" would be 22 inches from corner to diagonally opposite corner.

Is this correct or am I dreaming again?

Yes, it is diagonally, it should be the visible area but as Richard says, some measure any part hidden by the surround as well!

Also watch out if buying a wide screen TV, they are measured in the same way but a wide screen version of a TV will be shorter in height, eg a standard TV screen of 20" diagonally would be around 13" inches high, but a 20" widescreen TV might only be around 10" inches in height ... those extra 3" inches could really make a difference!!!! :$ :-D
