As our VHS is on the blink we are having to upgrade , do we go Sky and have a Sky + Box or buy a recorder like a + box or a VHS / DVD recorder  with a digital receiver included in the appliance ? there are so many options we need something simple to use possibly tape 2 programs at same time including digital channels if anyone has any recomendations your views would be appreciated.

We have a digital aerial and set top box at the moment.

We have a SKY Plus system and it's really easy to use.  You can record 2 programs at a time (3 if you live in the Virgin catchment area) and you just locate the program you want and click [record].

No phaffing about with start time, stop time or day of week.  Having selected the program to record you can, if you want to, click the green button to 'record series'.

That way, every episode in the series will be recorded irrespective of what day and what time the episodes start and finish.

That has been a godsend recently as I've been 'taping' Little Dorrit for Mrs Way2Go and the viewing schedule seems to be all over the place but after hitting just two buttons I can record the every episode - excellent.

Agree with W2G, Sky+ is excellent for recording up to 2 programmes at a time.

What you could consider is linking the Sky+ box to a DVD recorder, then you could transfer programmes that you want to keep from the Sky box to the recorder using either recordable discs or via the recorders hard drive.

Sky Plus and a Sling Box combination, then you can simply record anything you want and watch it anywhere you like. I recently used this combo in Norway to record then watch selected Olympic coverage on my mobile phone, though I could equally have used my laptop. You do need to find a wifi hotspot though, unless you have a really good data package from your mobile phone supplier.

Who do you have to change from VHS? Have look on your local 'freecycle' and put a posting on there for a video recorder, tha way it buys you some time to decide to upgrade at your leisure if you want to.

We have 2 video recorders in our home, one in the lounge and another in the kitchen, that way if I'm working in the kitchen I can just take a pre-recorded tape and stuff it in the machine. We have a DVD recorder as well but that doesn't get much use ...

I like video! 8-) Long may it continue ..... :->

I agree - just because it ain't a new idea does not make it useless!

Ignore the hype - go for vfm - and when the new kit comes down to a sensible price then is the time to change!

or buy an Archos!

Depending on model you can use it as a tv, record from tv, or sky or freeview box etc. you can go on the internet with its built in wifi. Also you can back up your movies, pictures and music from your computer to it and take those files with you and either play them through its own screen or a tv or via an FM transmitter on your cab radio. When at home it sits in a cradle which is connected to your tv and Sky/ freeview box so you can record at the touch of a button or schedule recordings via the viewing guide.

We have one and also have Sky plus HD so can dump any movies from that to the Archos and take 'em with us.

At the moment our Archos has about 20 movies, around 2500 photos and around 200 music albums on it and there is still plenty of room.

We have just come back from 10 days in a hotel in Paris (went for the BNP Paribas Masters tennis) and used the archos for wifi internet in the hotel - saved taking the lappy as well as a darn great suitcase.

We Have the Archos 705 (this one doesn't have an in built tv tuner) which you can get in 80 and 160 gig sizes.

We got it from QVC (when they do it it comes complete with the docking ststion which you would buy separately from other places you also get a voucher to download the internet software).

The 705 has the larger screen size - they also do a 605 with the same hard drive capacity.
