Hi,

Depends if you are going south by the east or west and how long you wish to take.

All the main trunk roads are free and quite fast. Some m/ways are free they are aminly in the west side of France.

Have a look at the michelin site for a good up to date map that will show you non toll roads http://www.viamichelin.fr/viamichelin/fra/tpl/hme/MaHomePage.htm

The A20 autoroute begins at Vierzon (north-west of Bourges), then runs south to Limoges and onwards to just south of Brive-la-Gaillarde. This section of the A20 is toll-free, but tolls are imposed on the remaining part of the A20 that continues from Brive-la-Gaillarde southwards to Montauban.

The A75 autoroute takes over from the A71 at Clermont-Ferrand and runs southwards to Pezenas, north-east of Beziers. The A75 is toll-free EXCEPT for a shortish section that includes the Millau Bridge.

The AA maps of France (based on IGN data) show toll and toll-free autoroutes in different colours, so it's easy to identify which is which.

Just a reminder John that many of the Routes Nationales are being re-classified as Departementale roads (D) now so many of the numbers have changed. Quite confusing at the moment because the changes are not necessarily logical - the Departement can number them how they choose i.e. N1 will not necessarily be renumbered as D1. If you use a sat-nav this will probably not have caught up yet.

Look at a map of France and look at the Motorways on it , you then need to look at the junctions of the motorway on the map,and if it says PEAGE you have to pay if not its free, thats what we do any way, or if you have a Sat Nav ,just set it to avoid Toll Roads, easy peasy.
