snobbyafghan
I got an iPhone 3g a couple of weeks ago and it's very good. Whilst at home, it works on the broadband WiFi and is, in effect, a teeny-weeny laptop. The way the screen works and the full keyboard, touch pad (which only appears when you need it) makes using the internet and emailing very easy and practical. I can access my emails from either my phone or my laptop which is very useful. But it comes into it's own when you are out and about. I used to have to lug my laptop round with me if I was away in the van for a weekend to keep up to date with emails etc but no longer. The iPhone works on the phone network and, if you can get a 3g signal. it operates at a very acceptable speed. Even without 3g, it's still reasonable. And, if you can find a WiFi hotspot or free acctess like MacDonalds, you can go back on to WiFi even when out and about. Downside? Well the camera's pretty basic but I've still got my SonyEricson phone which covers that requirement if needed and the batery needs re-charging about once per day if you're using all the functions. That is poor compared to a standard phone but pretty good if compared to a laptop and I think the IPhone is closer to being a laptop than a phone. All-in-all, a great gadget for Motorhomers. SAS
Yes I have to agree, they`re great little contraptions. My husband has an o2 Orbit XDA same sort of thing but I prefer a flip phone with a proper keypad. I can access almost as much as him with the Opera Browser on my Nokia 7390 without having to fiddle around and use that little stick thingy. Opera is a great browser for a mobile phone and you`d be suprised that even older phones can use it, although the download time will be longer. I always use the 3.1 version as it`s more modified for a mobile and the advantage of using your phone as a mini laptop is that it`s always `wireless, you can charge it from the 12volt and don`t need an inverter! enodreven
Hi, Can you confirm if the iphone you have can work with the high speed 3G network I think some of the companies call it 3.5G or HSDPA or is it just the 3G network Thanks
snobbyafghan
SAS - the iPhone doesn't have a stick-thingy for text input. When you need text - for emailing, texting, making notes, filling in boxes on websites etc, a full QWERTY keyboard appears on screen and you tap away on that. It has a neat device for making corrections and is much quicker to use than a normal phone keypad. Braunston - I'm not sure is the answer. I'll enquire on one of the iPhone forums and let you know. LordThornber
A friend of ours who drinks in our local, solves more pub arguments with his iphone than, well, anything!! If they were available on Orange, (who I believe have an equivalent), I would buy one without hesitation. Martyn
bertieburstner
it's also frighteningly easy to buy music on it when you are connected to wi fi! takes about 10 seconds to download a track. Perhaps the most useful(?) application is a downloadable free application called meetbubble, which turns the phone into a spirit level! I do miss not sending pictures by text. enodreven
Hi, Thanks for the information I may purchase one for christmas now, I was told that it would only work with the old 3G and not the newer highspeed mobile broadband, so its good to know that it will work Thank you snobbyafghan - 2008-11-27 3:38 PM braunston - 2008-11-26 10:51 PM Hi, Can you confirm if the iphone you have can work with the high speed 3G network I think some of the companies call it 3.5G or HSDPA or is it just the 3G network Thanks Apparently it does support HSDPA according to members on the o2 forum. colin
The iphone has gone back on my short list as it seems to have fewer problems than most smart phones, but I note apple have had to drop latest advert as it was shown doing series of tasks in 21? secs that actualy take 5 times longer!
