DVLA Registration for Motorhomes

Can I ask everyone what info should there be on the DVLA Registration document that lets people know that your vehicle has changed from its original description to a motorhome, and would these changes alter the amount of road tax.

Our new coachbuilt 17ft Nu-Venture Rio was built onto a 2007 Peugeot Expert van base

When we received the new registration documents a few weeks ago it read - body type Flat Lorry (light goods vehicle) Seats 3. The Tax was £180).

We have returned the registration document explaining (with photo) of the changes made. Filling in section 7 - Changes to current vehicle. With letter stating that it was now a two birth motorhome, with 2 seats up front, and two 4ft seats facing inward in the motorhome section, ( these inward facing seats made up the bed).

Did we send the correct type of information, and will these changes make a difference when the new road tax laws come out in the near future?

Thanks.

Kris

The 'Body Type' should be recorded as 'Motor Caravan' on the V5C registration document. The DVLA might need to inspect the conversion at your local VOSA testing station before they will make the alteration.

As the conversion was done on a previously registered vehicle there should be no change in taxation class or amount payable.

Kris,

There is an earlier long thread on motorhome 'wrong taxation classification' on

http://www.outandaboutlive.co.uk/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=12699&posts=29

The vehicle-excise classification of individual vehicles is delegated to local DVLA offices. The best thing to do if something seems wrong is to contact your local DVLA office (a face-to-face visit is best), explain the situation, and ask what you need to do to get the error corrected. The documentation you have already provided may be sufficient, or (as Andy C suggests) the DVLA may demand that your Rio be physically inspected.

All 'sub-3500kg' motor caravans should be classified for Vehicle Excise purposes as Private/Light Goods (PLG) and the duty payable should be appropriate to that class (currently £185 annually for vehicles with an engine-capacity exceeding 1549cc). If the DVLA accepts that a vehicle's taxation class should be altered and the duty payable for the vehicle's 'new' class differs from the duty payable for its 'old' class, then a financial adjustment will be involved.

I have read throught the previous threads and this one - and still confused.

Just received my V5 for a new van conversion (Murvi Morello) and it states "Panel Van" as the body type.

I believe this should be "Motorhome"?

The taxation class is "Disabled" as it was adapted for a wheelchair user - but I believe the body type should still reflect the conversion?

Will consult the "local" vehicle taxation centre tomorrow.

CAB,

The DVLA does not use the term "motorhome" officially. A motorhome's V5C should show its Body Type as "MOTOR CARAVAN".

Normally, a motorhome would be registered with a taxation class of Private/Light Goods Vehicles (PLG) or Private HGV, depending on its weight, but I can well believe that a 'disabled' factor will override that. It's not something I know about.

I note that there's information on taxing a vehicle in the Disabled class on

In spite of the reported misgivings from others who have posted on this subject I received some helpful advice from the DVLA in Swansea today.

Apparently all I need to do is fill in the change of classification section (as stated by Derek and others as "Motor Caravan") on the V5 and return this with a copy of the invoice (in my case from Murvi) and they will do the rest.

He said they did not want any photographs and an inspection was an option, but not likely if the documentation was in order.

Thanks everyone for your replys to my DVLA question.

We already had our motorhome a few weeks before we received the new Reg Certificate. It was registered and taxed by the company that sold us the motorhome, not the people who converted it. I believe they should have said it had been changed to a motorhome when applying, but somehow forgot.

I did write "Motorhome " in section 7 myself when we returned it to the DVLA, along with a description (& photo) and now wait to see what they have to say.

I will let you all know what they say, and if there are any problems. It may help others in the future, if they have the same problem.

  • 5 weeks later...

Update

Taken a month or so but now have the amended DVLA document with the requested Motor Caravan classification. All done via post as outlined earlier.

Now have to persuade Fiat that I can now take advantage of the enhanced Camper Service after they initially questioned the eligibility because it was registered as a Panel Van.

Update .

We finally got the registration back for our Motorhome. now marked as Motor caravan, (previously marked flat bed lorry)

But only after having to send photos of inside and out, a complete breakdown of how it was built, inside and out, and receipts of the work done on the conversion (the latter we did not have of course because we had bought it as a motorhome in the first place from P & P Campers).

Thankfully Nu-Venture (the body makers) sent us a breakdown of everything.

So if anyone else is out there with the same problem - send all the details you can to the DVLA, just in case.
