Teaching Maths In 2000 A logger sells a truckload of timber for £100. His cost of production is £80 and his profit is £20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20. 5. Teaching Maths In 2008 A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of £20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers. )
donna miller
That is so much closer to the truth than intended, made me chuckle though.
LordThornber
I hope the birds and squirrels received both adequate compensation and counselling which was appropriate for their needs. Personally I think their rights were brutally abused and a robust Policy & Procedural Review should take place ASAP. I'll chair the Review, Janine maybe you would take the minutes? Martyn :D

Personally I think their rights were brutally abused and a robust Policy & Procedural Review should take place ASAP. I'll chair the Review, Janine maybe you would take the minutes? Martyn :D You can't get away with that Martyn, it's sexist. You take it for granted that Janine will act as secretary because she is female. That's just not on these days. I suggest that Janine takes the chair, and you take the minutes. (You could also supply her with a cup of tea and a biscuit to atone). ;-)
LordThornber
Malc, no taking for granted there at all, but knowing Janines' superior grasp of the English Language, I just know she'd make a much better job of it. Then she can brew up for me.. :D :D
donna miller
Malc, I'm sorry but you are taking it for granted that Janine is a women, and that is sexist. Why couldn't a man be called Janine or Donna. Therefore I demand that you chair the meet AND take minutes while Janine and Myself do our nails and talk about who's dating who. :D :D

I was sure that Janine is a female because of her avatars, not just because of her name. Although recently, it seems, she may be a reindeer. ;-)
Hymer C 9.
Janine that is so near the truth to be scary - a friend who is a teacher said it would probably go a step further - there would be a form with everything written out and dots to fill in with the answers then the form is handed back in by the pupil who copied exactly the form with the dots put in but no answers.Social awareness now has to be taught in with everything else - the mind boggles :-( Carol. Mel B
And what type of squirrels are we talking about? This is important as, if it is the much persecuted grey squirrels, then most people won't give a damn, but if it's the nice little red squirrels there'll be hell to pay! :-S
J9withdogs
Hee hee - I love your responses (lol) There was a final example for how teaching would look in 2020, but it was in arabic and this website couldn't cope with it :D (plus I didn't know if it would be very pc *-) )

Patricia
Janine you have a wonderful wit and really make me chuckle - thank you. Having said that the actual subject is not funny in the least. As a retired teacher the dumbing down of knowledge and skills is of real concern. How will these pupils cope in the real world when they have to make perhaps life and death decisions without all the prompting. There is also the problem of the "blind leading the blind" with regards to the shortage of qualified teachers. I was once asked to teach German to one group (of very intelligent pupils) for the following year to fill a space on my timetable. At the time I actually knew 60 words of German - even less now!! GJH
Has the person who set the 2008 question received a peerage in order to become a member of the government yet - or is that going to happen in the new year honours list? Graham
