Assuming that oven chips are cooked as per their instructions which contain more fat - thin ones or fat ones? Thin ones seem to absorb more fat because they are thin and often seem fatty through and through whereas thick ones have a greater surface area and seem to have more fat free potato in t' middle although more potato would also have a greater potential for absorbing fat? Once the skins have absorbed a certain level of fat do they then stop taking any more on board or does it continue to soak into the interior but be masked by the fatty exterior? Do crinkle cut chips with their greater surface area absorb more or less fat than straight cut chips? There are also other burning questions of our day but I will save them for ron. Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 Now not meaning to ask awkward questions but are these oven chips home made ones or bought frozen in a packet, I am always suspicious of frozen ones never sure what has been added to them. Now me I would par boil my potatoes then chip them do them with spray light and cook them that way. Oh so many ways to cook a humble chip :-) Carol. It may have started life below ground but the application of a little lubrication and some heat transforms it into that delight of all who survey it - the Great British Chip! Mel B Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 Thin chips have a higher fat content than thick chips - for every 100g of 'thin' chips the amount of surface area covered in fat is greather than for 100g of 'thick' chips. That's why thin chips are worse for you than thick chips. That's why if you do decide to fry chips, you should make them chunky ones and not thin ones ... just forget the scraps!!! :D Forgot to say, crinkle cut chips are the worst of all as the crinkle give them an even larger surface area to get coated in fat!!! Hopesy Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 Now I'm worried as we're staying in tonight for home cooked steak and chips (last blow out of the christmas/new year holiday). It didn't occur to me before, but now i have to go and check on the fat content of the chips. It may be that you've gone and spolit my night, I'll have to open another bottle of cabernet sauvignon to bring happiness back. Fat chips taste better and not soggy ones (as the german capt said) . Philman Posted January 3, 2009 Share Posted January 3, 2009 I only cook oven chips when we have a lot of the family staying for dinner. I cook chips for the two of us in the chipper I prefer fat chips and my wife prefers thin chips, so we tend to alternate. I really love chips and mayo, especially in the cornet shaped containers with a large dollop of German Mayo, definitely the best there is. Phil.
