Opera - should it be banned?

Hee hee.. that got your attention, didn't it?

I love music in many forms, but I cannot stand opera.

Screeching women singing in a foreign language just doesn't do it for me, I'm afraid.

Heavy metal, rock, country & western - great.

Gilbert & Sullivan is lovely, tuneful and tells a story I can understand.

But opera? Noooooo... it's just wrong! (As is ballet - but's that's probably worthy of a thread of it's own)

What do you think?

Country and Western? That's all about your dog dying isn't it, or your wife running away with a preacher. They all sound exactly the same to me! And the accents, they may as well be in a foreign language.

However, if it floats your boat it's no skin off my nose. You enjoy your brand of warbling and we real music fans will enjoy ours!

Whilst it is not a genre of music that I like, I don't think it should be banned everyone is entitled to their own tastes, so long as it is not forced on others. However I DO most definately object to it being subsidised from taxes (local or National) or the Lottery, if it cannot survive alone with those that like it supporting it, then I am afraid it should fall by the wayside.

Just my opinion.

Hmm...good point, David.

BUT

Do I fork out £50 to go and see something that I might find to be 3 hours of pure torture?

There are bands that I wouldn't pay to see live because I don't like their music, so I don't think that I would pay to go to the opera on the same basis.

Not my scene either, but ban it? I don't think so.

Not unless Rupert and his mates start playing it too loud through their iPods on trains! :D

PS I liked it when they used to use "personal stereos." Then I could ask them which bit of "personal" they didn't understand!

Hi J9withdogs

Yes agreed, some opera's do have some rather high notes in them but most certainly not all. I have had some wonderful experiences listening to many that are not in that catagory at all.

Like everything else, country music included, no one likes it all.

Pick one that has a lighter vein and give it a try, deep down inside you, you know you wan't to

No, I can understand that and by the same token I expect I would not pay to see a Heavy Metal band! However if you choose the right one it can be be quite a magical experience. Opera's are like plays with music, they tell a story. Mind you the story is always the same! We were very fortunate that our company paid for us to go to Glyndebourne where we attended a performance of Bizet's Carmen which was superb. We have also seen several opera's at the Royal Albert Hall. If they still do them here its where I would suggest its a good place to start although a little looked down upon by opera buffs!

Some of it really grates on the ears - especially when it is some huge woman with a ringlet wig pretending to be a 16 year old pretty vigin :-S

And best not to start on the chap larger than a barrage ballon that is supposed to be a virille athletic young chap (but it does give me hope 8-) )

If anyone wants to just have a taste of what some of it is all about - just pick up a CD of well known Opera Choruses. Some can be had for as little as a few £'s in some supremarkets.

Make sure it has :-

Chorus of the hebrew slaves Act 3 Nabucco (BRILLIANT!)

and a real must is

Polovtsian Dances Act 2 Prince Igor (you will recognise it when you hear it and I defy anyone not to sing along :-D)

Then that old favourite the:-

Soldiers Chorus Act 4 Scene 3 Faust (again a real sing along)

Then there is the one done to a turn by the Two Ronnies!!! 8-)

Les Voici! Voici La Quadrille Act 4 Carmen.

As well as enjoying the song - I still laugh at what they did to it (lol)

You could be converted you know J9 B-)

Oiiii Janine! I have certain experiences in life that are yet to happen.... gosh, that was bad English but i'M FIGHting to keep my eyes open, sorry. Anyway, I have never been to an opera or a ballet and I REALLY want to. The ballet would have to be something like Swan Lake or the Red Shoes (sort of basic or not too high brow) and the opera I really want to go to is Madame Butterfly. Whether I will every make them is doubtful but please don't ban opera.

From someone who just loves music of any kind.... music and beautiful scenery touch my emotions more than can be imagined. :'( Joy x

Janine ... singing in foreign language does nothing for you? How's about Julio Iglesias whilst gazing into your eyes? ;-)

I wouldn't ban it. All the Female singers have a magnificent set of lungs. Look at the beautiful Katherine Jenkins. Drool......Drool. :-> :-> :-> :D

There is music to suit every taste, what might appeal to me might not appeal to you, some opera work I like and some I dont.

The problem is when you get the elitist types looking down on others, words and music for me depends on the mood I am in at the time of listening, its just the same with reading material such as books and newspapers, you pays your money and takes your choice, one kind of "music" I dont like is punk, sooner do ten years in Dartmoor.

Must admit to liking the 40's big band sound and Italian/American crooners, a certain piece of music or a song can invoke sad or happy moments from years gone by.
