Autoroute gone but not forgotten?

I have just bought a new laptop and in a fit of financial fluidity thought I may as well buy a new copy of Autoroute as my old one is 2004. It appears however that 2007 was the last one and Microsoft are not going to update it.

I liked having A/R on the laptop as a back up to the sat nav and would like something similar - Any suggestions folks?

I have Garmins "Mapsource" on the laptop but I just liked the way A/R worked.

I also like Autoroute and have also just updated to the 2007 edition. I find it very useful for planning my trips and working out distances.Did not realise MS were not going to carry on with it.

Patricia - 2009-01-07 9:06 PM Looks more sophisticated than 2004 but I wonder whether the campsite pushpins programme will still work with it?

Yes they do. It upgrades the programme automatically. Problem is the pushpins are now out of date.

I was actually trying to avoid buying A/R 2007 - The maps in that version were already out of date (2005) so it would now be 4 years out of date.

It would appear that, normally, A/R would be in the shops by the September prior to its title year - so A/R 2007 was available Sept 2006.

Mappoint 2009 is available but it costs a small fortune so is Streets and tips but that it is not really what I am after.

Any other suggestions as to alternative programmes with similar functionality for the whole of Europe anyone?

Thanks for that reply Miami. Does anyone know who actually produced the campsite pushpins and whether they will ever be updated? I find these very useful as a starting point when planning a trip.

Well, yes, and no.  It seems it is now being sold as Map Point Europe for around £50 inc VAT.  However, it is only just shipping, and very few outlets seem to have it for sale.  It looks as though the mapping is much more comprehensive than A/R 2007, so it may be worth a look, especially if visiting the old communist block countries of central Europe.

Hi Bernie, the ACSI DVD is a lot cheaper than Autoroute and although it does not have quite the same detail at street level it is almost as good as a route planner.

An added advantage is that it contains the positioning of many thousands of campsites all over Europe with gps accuracy.

It is updated every year and the 2009 version is due for publication in the next few days.

Phil.

When I originally posted I had checked prices for Mappoint and in the States it was around 280 to 300 dollars and oddly £280 to £300 in the UK.

After seeing some of the other posts above I did another search and still there were some at the above prices and others at around £50 advertised as full versions! So these are likely to be the ACSI versions?

There are also downloadable versions -not with my broadband speed it would take about 12 months and be out of date before it arrived.

Why did M/soft have to buy Autoroute out - it was a great prog in its original AA Autoroute uniform as a DOS only prog (remember DOS).

I think I will wait untill there have been some reviews of the Mappoint 2009 before I plunge in. Meanwhile Michele has made me a rather kind offer of a 2007 AR which should keep me going for some time.

The ACSI DVD is not a substitute for Autoroute/MapPoint, and is not from Microsoft.  It is merely a route finder for their (ACSI) listed campsites.  It works, but it is slow, and it lacks all the routing options of A/R.  That is to say it will propose its route, take it or leave it!

A/R 2007 is fine, provided you don't want to travel East of Austria.  For those countries, A/R 2002 is far better!

Yes, the DOS version, had it been properly developed, would by now be streets (apologies!) ahead of any of the present versions.  Best of all was the way it would simultaneously calculate shortest, quickest, preferred and three alternative routes, and present them all on the same map.  Brilliant!  You could then just take the bits you liked from each, and stitch them together into a route you actually wanted.  Progress, eh?  :-)
