MandyAndy
I am feeling a bit guilty and wondered if others give tips at christmas. I gave to the bin men and milk man but forgot the Postie who goes out of his way to help when he can, we get alot of parcels in our work. Don't feel I can give him something now as it looks like he is an after thought. Do people still do this or am I just an oldie with traditions long gone? Mick H.
Hi Mandy Tip giving in that area is alive and well. I worked at a manor house for ten years and it was done there. If you get a good service then show appreciation, if not tell them why not. Mick

Usinmyknaus
I used to tip generously all the regular tradespeople and service providers but now..... There is a different postman every day and my mail is frequently mis-delivered to several addresses, one of which opens every item before forwarding it, usually with coffee or tea stains. In the last 18 months I have received mail for 12 different addresses as far away as Birmingham and Shropshire. (Yes I complain but to no avail - most baffling excuse from sorting office manager "I currently have no delivery staff who can read English".) Rubbish is collected fortnightly and again, I never seem to see the same people twice! I clean my own windows and walk to get the paper - hmm, perhaps I'll tip myself next year. Randonneur
Usinmyknaus - 2009-01-13 10:41 AM (Yes I complain but to no avail - most baffling excuse from sorting office manager "I currently have no delivery staff who can read English".) Bob I am sorry that I am just going off thread but thought that I must voice my opinion on something I saw on the TV last night regarding the above. As we originate from the Oldham area we watch the North West News and yesterday a young girl went missing on her way to school, it showed the Police Officers going door to door at one particular house asked "do you speak English?" I was astounded. Now I know Oldham is a very multicultural Town as it was 30 years ago when we lived there but to knock on a door and automatically have to ask the question seems absurd. We live in France and whenever anybody comes to our door it is assumed that we speak French and if we can't understand them its our bad luck. As far as tipping is concerned our postlady is the same one most of the time and when it nears Christmas she appears with a selection of Calenders that you buy for whatever you think one is worth. We usually buy her a box of chocolates as well but this year we had a temporary postlady and gave her the chocolates. When it came to New Year our permanent postlady said thankyou for the chocolates, so the temporary one had passed them on, which was a nice gesture. We also have the local Fire brigade round to give them a donation and yet another Calender.
Rapido-lass
Tipping is a way to show appreciation, to me there is no set time to show appreciation, and in fact if anything means more when done off the cuff rather than at the time when it is expected of you - that personally puts me off. MandyAndy
Yes think your'e right, I went to catch the postman today but he looked like he had just got off the school bus so will wait for the regular one, he gets one day off a week and never the same one. davenewellhome
I never give Christmas tips and never have, probably never will either. These people are all well, and regularly, paid and visit hundreds, nay, thousands of households a week. If only a third of the households give them a fiver each they'll make a fortune out of us. I often speak to the postman, the refuse collectors, the recycling collectors (they like us because we sort our recycling into separate plastic boxes which saves them time) etc and its all very pleasant and good natured but that's all they're going to get.
