Does anyone know of a good night stop in or near Dover I can use prior to catching an early morning ferry?

Many people park up for the night on Marine Parade. Head for the ferry terminal, at the last roundabout before the terminal do a U turn and head back in the direction you have just come from, Marine Parade is first turning on your left.

We frequently stop in the well off the road lay by about 2 miles short of Dover with the lorries for company. However we also drive through Dover first to get a take away then go back and park up for the night. There are good lay bys each side of the road and convienient turnaround point at the B2011 junction. This gives the security provided by hunky lorry drivers without the hassle of drunks causing anoyance in the area.

Colin We've stayed at Dover's Marine Parade now on 4 occasions in 2005, 2 nights in June (Friday & Saturday), 1 in August (Friday), 1 in September (Saturday). We haven't had any problems at all and it's lovely at night watching the lights of the Channel vessels as they chug in and out of the harbour. Or you can go for a stroll along the parade itself for a nice pre-bed saunter! There are also some nice chippies in the town. It's ideally placed for the ferry terminal as it only takes a couple of minutes to get to. Make sure you park towards the end of the parade furthest away from the main ferry terminal so that you don't obscure the views of the residents and also get away from the night club - it's not that noisy though in any case and we were never disturbed by anyone leaving in the early hours. You'll find other motorhomers and even caravanners there who are waiting for the early ferry or who arrive on the late one and want to get some kip before their long drive home. As with all 'wild' camping areas, don't leave any trace that you were there, take your rubbish with you so you don't clog up the bins etc and hopefully that way they will allow us all to use the area for the foreseeable future.

Thank you all for your suggestions, we normally don't overnight this side, but on the other side, but thought we would have a change. We are going on down to Portugal again but this time via the west coast of France and through the centre of Spain.

Colin, The front in Dover sounds fine, we have stopped in the car park of Tesco's with many others , its open 24hrs ,at the top of the hill just before you drop down into Dover, had no problems and handy for those last bits you might have forgotten. Have a good safe trip and be lucky. Mike.

We have many times overnighted the other side as well at Cap Blanc Nez overlooking the channel just past Sangatte but I understand from previous postings that this area is now under development. We intend to check it out soon. Good luck

Colin, We overnighted at Marine Parade in late November. This has the advantage that it is at the rear of police accomodation, plus there is a regular tour of the area by police car to deter people from sleeping rough. Be sure to be away before the meter maid comes round at, I think, 08:30 - you can seen when parking tikets are required from the signs. Cap Blank Nez is now open, of sorts. The old rough parking near the bottom of the hill so loved by camping carists has now been prepared for coaches, but during the week-end before Christmas there were six to eight 'vans there, and no coaches. There is a height barrier intended to restrict access to further up the hill. However, there is no no vehicular access beyond the point where the up hill and down hill bits came together. Everybody has to walk to the top to the edge of the cliff and the memorial. John
