New cambelt quote

Dave, we haven't had the bill yet, we've been with them so long they bill us at the end of the month!

The service was a short service, we had the big one done last year at about £140. My husband assures we it includes oil and air filter and oil. I don't know about fuel filter, but I'll try to remember to let you know when we get the bill.

The garage is Fiat authorised and is also used by the police, Tesco to name a couple. We have seen other motorhomes there also.

Now you're confusing me, earlier on you said:

"We've had our cambelt replaced today at a cost of £295. It's a fiat garage but not the main dealer. They look after our cars and another four belonging to our children and spouses. They give us good service and I would recommend them to anyone.

They are Tancocks, based on the Sowton trading estate in Exeter."

Then you added this posting:

"I should have said also that this amount included a service, which is £80 - £90."

So if you haven't had the bill yet how do you know what the cambelt and service cost?? :-S :-S

I'm not knocking the garage as I have no knowledge of them, I'm just confused by the pricings you've quoted.

D.

I got a better quote from the company today that Brian flagged up. Interestingly, the chap said that my cambelt doesn't really need changing yet. According to him its due at either 100,000 miles or 7 years old. That seems a long time to me. Is that correct ?

I would get quotes from a few motorhome suppliers, or specialist garages. Make sure that the tensioners and WATER PUMP are done as well!

You can nigh on guarantee if you don't do the pump, it will go a few months later! lol! Then you will be doing the whole job again!

Never had a water pump go on a vehicle in my life and I keep mine a long time. Current dai;y use car is 23 Yrs old. :-S

When I got the first quote I asked the garage to include a water pump. They came back later with a price and said that Fiat had never sold one for my model !

I'd obviously check the bearings though and if in doubt I'd replace it.

I think it's the water seals on the seals that go Bob.  I don't think they can be inspected or replaced, but when they go the bearing gets washed out with coolant, so then the bearing fails.  If spending money on the cambelt it is probably a wise precaution to get the pump changed.  Unlike Peter, I have had two go on vehicles much newer than 23 years, so I know it can happen!

As an update, I got the cambelt changed a couple of days ago. The price was £355.35 incl VAT. I took the motorhome to Kevin Griffin Cars in Horsham, which also MOT's my fleet.

They fitted the Fiat kit, tensioner, pulleys, and the like. I asked them to check the water pump and if there is any doubt to replace it. On collection, they said the pump was fine.

Whether the mechanic worked around the air conditioning pipework or disconnected it, I don't know.
