Press Release 23rd February 2009

In these troubled times, good news is hard to find; particularly in the motor industry. Not so in the British motorhome manufacturing business, where Cotswold-based Auto-Sleepers Ltd are enjoying something of a renaissance.

Founded almost 50 years ago and long recognised as the benchmark for a quality-built product, Auto-Sleepers have seen their sales rise by almost 30% over the last few months. This remarkable figure has been backed by statistics from the recent ‘National Boat, Caravan & Outdoor Show’ held at the NEC Birmingham, where Auto-Sleepers’ sales on last year were up a staggering 17%, whilst show attendances were down by around 12% on the previous year.

When asked about their recent resurgence, Auto-Sleepers’ Chief Executive, Geoff Scott said, “In the current economic climate, European importers are suffering because of the strength of the Euro against Sterling, making their products expensive. In turn, this is offering the British manufacturer an opportunity to regain market share and we are thrilled to be enjoying increased sales at this difficult time”.

With foreign holidays becoming more expensive because of the weak Pound, the British tourism industry could be in for a ‘bumper’ year.

It's thrilling to know that a well established, well known converter like this is doing well in such hard times and that they are optimistic about the future of this leisure activity.

I just wonder though, are they optimistic enough to drop Fiat base vehicles from their lineup until such time as they (FIAT) put right the terrible mess they have brought forward with the X/250 reverse gear problem highlighted in another thread on this forum?

A much better announcement than letting people gossip and speculate on AS's demise. When there is a communication gap, people will worry unnecessarily.

In times of trouble, you have to over communicate.

Let's also hope AS keep their focus on Fords!

As only use Peugeot variants of the Sevel range and apparently Peugeot are going to fix the problem vans.

In the March 2009 Caravan Club Magazine there is a report on the new Auto-Sleepers "Broadway" Peugeot Boxer-based coachbuilt model.

The article says that the test-vehicle's 2.2litre 130bhp motor was "a higher-torque engine more suited to hauling a large body", adding that "The final drive ratio has also been lowered".

Another comment was "Although the vehicle was built last September, reverse-gear vibration was not present and we had no problem when backing up a slope, though the gear ratio in the six-speed box does feel too high."

(I just mention this in passing in case anybody is interested in Auto-Sleepers' latest 'baby'.
