tonyg3nwl
I went to bank yesterday to enquire current exchange rates and get some money for forthcoming trip. Horrified to find £1 gets 1.05 euro. Today see that Bank of England are going to print a considerable number of pounds, but that must surely reduce value even further.. seem to remember that someone once said that the pound in your pocket is still the same, and at that time you could get a lot of Francs. Hope France Passion sites book arrives soon and has enough sites with spaces to spare.! Tonyg3nwl (!) (!) (!) (!) (!) (!) (!)

Certainly this is devaluation by another name, same as in 1967 and 1976, and I believe that Harold Wilson uttered the famous words about the pound in the pocket. All rubbish of course. We are no way near to the level of Germany in the 1930s when you needed a pram full of money to buy a cup of coffee but we are on the way. Are you quoting the old or new franc - I can't remember when it changed - but my French neighbouts still discuss house prices in the old franc! By the time I have made a reasonable calculation I have missed the rest of the conversation!! Incidentally my currency notification this morning was quoting 1.117 down about 0.2 this week. Cattwg
The Post Office gives a surprisingly good rate - better than M&S at the moment, according to their websites. But I'm with 'The Judge' and always use a Nationwide card when in Europe. Cattwg :-D
tonyg3nwl
re "The Post Office gives a surprisingly good rate - better than M&S at the moment, " always use a Nationwide card when in Europe. " 2 problems 1 Nationwide just announced they are to start charging 2 Local Post office quoting same miserable rate as bank guess it will cost more for our holiday... never mind , Gordon wants us to spend spend spend..... Guest JudgeMental
Re Nationwide I think you will find that they are charging for withdrawals ONLY outside of Europe at 1%
colinfrier
If your a regular visitor to Europe it would be worthwhile opening a Euro account in the UK and watching the rate and buy when the rate is at an acceptable level the rate for a £5000 transfer with someone like Interchange or Currincies Direct should be close to interbank rate but play one off against the other to get a good deal.
