Desperate Measures – I can’t do it myself anymore !

I need the services of a recommended auto electrician who wont moan about the fact that I have a Ducato 2.3Jtd ’06 Swift Sundance Motorhome – Bexley, Kent.

Hi everyone,

As you can tell by the title, I am at the last stop café – before I throw a match on the damn thing !

It’s a long story, but I wanted a multimedia radio with a reversing camera installed. My local Fiat Service centre recommended a local auto electrician as they themselves didn’t have the specialists there to deal with it.

As a result of this ‘professional’ installation I then had current drain issues. This went on for a year and two new starter batteries and some re-re-wiring later…

I have now rewired the stereo as it should be (myself) and have no current drains in the order of of magnitude as before. This was made more difficult due to the way this company had cut wires so short. Additionally it seemed the Blue/Yellow wire from the ignition switch seemed to be broken at some point, so I cut it near the Immobiliser box ( I think that’s what it is – where the immobiliser antenna loop also comes out) and wired in another feed for the radio ignition feed (not used for power).

I thought I was on the home straight and so started to think about the auto turn-off issue mentioned so often here and on the Fiat forum. By chance I noticed the immobiliser indicator light wouldn’t go out on the dash and so tried to start the engine – failure !

Over night and not ‘sleeping’ on the problem, I considered that maybe the blue/yellow wire also went somewhere else and that device was no longer getting a signal. I took the end of the original (still in place) wire and held it in place to make contact while I tried to start the engine – success – ran then engine for a minute then I turned it off.

I tried without this contact, and no start. I tried again with contact and this time, all the dials on the dash flickered several times in a negative inflection and then nothing.

Have I killed something ?

If I check voltage on the starter battery I get 8V. If I disconnect the battery, I get a healthy 12.8V.

I have tried both the keys I have.

I note in the manual there is no 'Emergency Start' for a diesel.

I have in the mean time disconnected the battery to save any continued drain.

I think I am beyond my scope of understanding and now just want to use my toy !!! - So willing to pay a good Auto Electrician who actually understands Ohm’s Law and has enough integrity and expertise to resolve this issue – bare in mind I can’t move it !

I have read every thread to do with immobilisers on this forum and the Fiat one. Not sure if I have killed mine, but would prefer to not take it out – since it’s there for a reason, but if the ‘bypass’ option proves it’s defective, then open minded.

Sorry this is a long post, would appreciate any recommendations as to personnel in my area who could come and look at this. Please don’t suggest either Fiat, Morgan Elliott – Belvedere or Autoleck, Eltham – for reasons above.

Many thanks

Clyde
