Tax disc re-newal on-line

I've been trying to re-new on-line for a week. Apparently if the insurance has a week left before expiry, DVLA won't accept it. I re-newed the insurance a couple of days ago, but as the company haven't put the details  on the DVLA computer...I still can't re-new the license !

The MOT's due in a couple of weeks and although the motorhome is booked in Monday, I'll be expecting to jump through hoops again there !

Apparently the DVLA welcome feedback on their service. I filled out all the boxes with my details and wrote of my displeasure of their assuming everybody's a criminal. I finished my message and hit the send button. A message immediately popped up telling me I had 'timed out' !

Actually, everything about this country is starting to make me sick to death of it.  Now.... where's next doors cat.....

I've got an idea!..Are there any Post Office's left Martyn ?

What's a Post Office Bob?

Haha, they're none existent nearly, (I feel so sorry for the elderly and/or disabled), and I'm glad that I only rarely have to use them. The Office in our Town Centre is disgusting. I'm not exaggerating, it needs industrial cleaners in.

Same happened to me......my insurance ran out on the 26th, tried to renew tax for April and it shot back “not insured” contacted safeguard and they said “it happens” and to do it manually at a post office.

After seeing this thread I tried it again over the phone and this time I was successful!

Try it again you may have more luck..........

Hi,

DVLA cannot refuse to tax your car provided your insurance is valid on the day that the tax comes into effect. I know that some POs used to make up their own rules.

My daughter wanted to move her tax-exempt Mini to her new address. She got a one day cover note, for a Sunday. She tried to tax it at a PO on the Saturday before. Refused! Would you believe that she found a PO open on a Sunday? One advantage of living in London.

What annoys me is that if you tax your car on-line using a credit card, they wil charge you an extra £2. But not if you use a debit card. Strange, because if you taxed it at a PO, DVLA has to pay the PO for the service. I don’t know how much, but 20 odd years ago, it was £0.75. So DVLA are saving money by allowing you to tax your car on-line. But if DVLA do not know that your car is insured, they will not tax it. I have know a PO that would tax my car on the strength of a FAXed cover note from my insurers to the PO.

If you are desperate for short term insurance cover, do a Google for “DAY INSURANCE”. It’s not cheap, but could be cheaper than more conventional ways.

And while you are Googling, do a search for “V5 LOAN”, and be amazed at what PAR some finance companies can charge.

Slightly off topic - but I received an email offering me a loan recently at 3%.

That's not bad, thought I -until I read that it was 3% per month!! Pretty shoddy when the base rate is so low.

The DVLA only require the MOT and Insurance to be valid on the date the disk comes into force to be able to re tax on-line. This is stated quite clearly when you go on their website.

I have just renewed our tax on-line for the 1st April with both MOT and Insurance expiring on the 11th April without a problem.

Bob, Insurance Companies have 14 days to update renewals/new business to the DVLA website.

Most tend to update on Monday each week.

Hi,

You are allowed to tax an untaxed car two days before the end of the month. Its fourteen days if it is already taxed.

But when my wife tried to tax her car (untaxed) on-line, within the two day period, it was refused. Two minutes after midnight, into the new month, it was accepted.

I can name a PO where the staff happily tell you about the thieves at DVLA. So support your PO! Yes, it happened, once, several years ago.

When we were in Malaya (mid-1960s) you could not tax your car for longer than your insurance had to run. But you could get a disc for any number of months, 2, or 11, or whatever was appropriate. Also, your insurers would not accept an insurance claim unless the incident had been reported to the police.

OT....but interesting. A character in our Swansea Valley small town could get you a half price tax disc. Just give him your insurance and MOT and cash, and he would give you a tax disc the following day. Genuine disc! Got lots of business. And then he left town. Shortly afterwards DVLA started writing to the Keepers, asking for return of the discs. The cheques had bounced.

Thanks Bazza, I just tried again this minute...still won't have it. I've got the MOT 10.45 Monday morning & I'll go to the Post Office directly after.

Thats the fella. Well known for his 'dicky knees'.

I've got a old squeeze box similar to that one. I bought it in a second hand shop some years ago. In the box were the instructions and a couple of well known popular songs to start one off.

One song was 'The Wind Blows o'er the Barley' and the other was 'God Save the King'!!  I kid you not.
