Don Madge
I've had a MRI scan and the results show a lot of wear and tear on my neck. The bottom line is I could do with a new neck. I can't see neck replacements happening in my lifetime. I've been referred to the local pain management clinic but I don't hold much hope in that direction. At present driving is very difficult for me. It looks like our long term winter touring is a thing of the past so we are looking for somewhere to spend Jan/Feb/March in the warm without the van. We are prepared to fly up to 8/9 hours but not on charter flights and are looking for a flat/bungalow or such like preferably with a sea view in a quiet area. We are not interested in the Iberian Peninsula or Morocco. We are very familiar with the med coast of Turkey but would prefer something hotter. If anybody has any ideas/suggestions or has/knows of suitable area with accommodation to rent it would be appreciated. Don
Guest Tracker
So sorry to hear that you are a confirmed pain in the neck Don. I don't know where you can go for winter warmth - others may be able to tell you where to go but I wouldn't dream of it - but I do know that although we have never met your years of accumulated wisdom will be much missed by us relative learners to the winter sun game. So before you disappear into the twighlight zone of airports may I thank you most sincerely on behalf of myself and everyone else on here who has benefited from your advice and help, and to wish both yourself and your good lady one very long and happy retirement. All the best - but don't go too soon please as we all need you still to bring so semblance of order to the proceedings. Rich & Dot.
donna miller
Hi Don Sorry to hear about your troubles, hope things improve for you. Florida is a safe bet for stable temperature throughout our winter, and there are quite a few long term lets available.
W3526602
Hi Don, Australia is out of the question? Near the tropics, near the Antartic. No? I didn't think so. A year ago, I thought I had a broken neck, could even show you where it was broken. Osteopath charged me not too big a sum the twist me around. Eventually I got the see the third doctor in my local health centre, gave her the same spiel as the other two doctors ..... walked out with a handful of precriptions and appointments. Had a scan, get results in two weeks, he said. Phone was ringing when we got home. Come to Surgery NOW. Go to hospital NOW. Large subjural haematoma, probably caused by a gentle fall three months before. Drilled a hole in my skull, and my neck didn't feel broken any more.
chatterdog
Dont be so sure Don. Did you mean the vertibre in your neck if so yes they do, do rebuilds and use either bone from your own hip or an artificial bone replacement piece. I had mine done nearly 2 years ago now. maggie
bob b
Hi Don, That's bad news indeed about your neck. You may find that regular sauna/steam baths will give you temporary relief on bad days. With regard to wintering somewhere hot, the Canaries is probably as good as anywhere. I go to Gran canaria every winter for 10 days...normally Feb or March, and the weather is generally wonderful. My last trip was about three weeks ago, and I swum in the altantic every day. On a couple of occasions, I found the sand uncomfortably hot to walk on...mustn't complain though. If I were in a similar position. I'd plumb for southern Gran Canaria. malc d
Sorry to hear about your problem Don. Does this mean no driving of the van at all or is it just no more of the long distances that you are used to covering ? Not sure where you are going to find the heat that you are looking for. How about the Caribbean ? Best of luck anyway - wherever you go.
Don Madge
Thanks for all the advice and good wishes. I'm hoping our motorhoming days are not over completely but I think we will have to be less ambitious in future. We will check out all the advice and hopefully find a place in the warm at a reasonable cost. See you at Peterborough, neck permitting. ROON
Just to add my best wishes and thanks to those already posted, Don. Hope you find somewhere warm to go to for the cold months. Is flying to Southern France out of the question? Joy
Rapido-lass
Sorry to hear of your neck problems. Just a thought - probably silly - but worth mentioning I think. Would it not be possible for someone else to do the long haul driving for you and fly home, leaving you with just short moves and then they fly back and drive the return journey for you? This way you still get away in the warm in your motorhome but just don't have to do the long journeys at the wheel.
Hymer C 9.
Don, just to add I hope you can get some pain releif to help you. Your experience wisdom and freely given advice have helped so many on the forum and far wider I am sure. Hope you find the sun and continue to enjoy shorter journeys with your van. Carol. davenewellhome
Don't write the pain management clinic off to quickly Don, our local clinic was the only place that found me any long term relief for my lower back problems and it took me three years to get my referral to the PMC. You should have seen my face when the consultant at the clinic said he could help me. Of course it isn't a cure but they can often help you to get substantial relief from constant pain. See you at P'boro', D.
Guest Tracker
Have you considered The Cape Verde Islands Don?
Don Madge
Hi Rich, We had a look at them along with most other likely spots within reasonable flying range of the UK. At present Barbados is in pole position. :-D We can't afford to get it wrong as we plan to spend three months there so we will have a two week trip there out of the main season to see what we can come up with. I'm hoping the pain clinic can sort my neck out so we can carry on motorhoming through the winter though. :-D See you at Peterborough (?)
