Easter monsoon

I've just had a look at the 10 day weather forecast to see what Easter holds in store. Wouldn't you know it.....rain ! Doesn't it make you want to spit !!

I had planned to visit Dorset, but in view of the miserable weather outlook I'm going to stay home and decorate the hiace (sussex house). I would normally brave it, but I set my heart on exploring the locality on the motorbike. I'll re-schedule my visit in a few weeks time. Am I the only 'fair weather' camper ?

Weather forecasting and accuracy are not to be used in the same sentance :D We're off to Brecon for Easter then on up to Snowdonia for the rest of the week, after spending a large proportion of my hard earned on the 'van I'm not going to let a bit of precipitation ruin it, anyway it'll be dry in the pub :D I'm sure Tracker once said the sun always in Wales.

Hi Bob,

We're off to Manchester, rain centre of the universe! I'd better fit flotation bags to the van..........

In almost 2 years of owning the van we have gone ahead with planned trips regardless of the forecast and enjoyed them even in bad-weather. I sometimes think that the BBC in particular is overly pessimistic since the Michael Fish affair - on the basis that if weather turns out better than forecast, no-one complains. We still go for walks even in bad weather and take the view that there are too few weekends in a year to miss out on a trip in our van.

I am required to cook oustide whatever the weather (no cooking smells allowed in the van) so not surprisingly, I take a keen interest in the forecast! Recent extreme cooking events include minus 7 degrees and steady snow, wind so strong I had to secure the camping cooker lid open with a bungy strap and rain cooling pans quicker than the gas was heating them...!

I always remember a quote by a Manchester local and that is, "If you can see the hills its going to rain and if you can't see the hills its already raining" LoL.

We're off to Yorkshire where it's meant to be raining most days. It doesn't put us off going away listening to the forcast as inevitably it's mostly wrong with just a ring of truth. We would have missed many a good break if we had acted on the weather forcast and not gone.

Given the choice I would much prefer the good weather, but along with that are the crowds of people etc so wrap up warm, invest in wet gear - well we do live in England - and miss the crowds and enjoy yourself. We have found that if we are away and it's raining we go out more than we would if we were at home and it was raining.

Happy Easter to all of you who are going away - hope the weather holds out, and Happy Easter to those who are staying at home too.

I'm sure Tracker once said the sun always shines in Wales.

Not quite - the sun always shines in PEMBROKESHIRE (except when it's persistently precipitating!) - and I don't care how wet the rest of Wales is!

Brecon Beacons at Easter eh? Never mind the rain you could just as easily get snow in them thar hills!

We'll be prepared, last Easter we had quite a lot of the white stuff in Cumbria and still had a whale of a tme. Listen to forecast pack clothes according to it then go and enjoy after all you're only here once

Its an urban myth that it is always raining in Manchester, scaremongering tactics put about by southerners, it hasn't rained here for the last 3 weeks and it is shirt sleeve weather, in point of fact I have got a tan, so there, ner ner

Don't know which smart a**e coined the phrase but I can't deny it's accuracy..

"No such thing as bad weather, just wrong clothing" :D

We were at Hawes for three nights from Monday this week (All we could get) it was Bl''dy freezing! Wet! Windy! we had one decent day so I shouldnt complain!! Easter is later this year isnt it? it should be a bit warmer!

Maggy, we took my Mother up to Hawes yesterday. It was a bit of a nostalgia trip really for her, she's not been back there since 1979, when we all stayed at The Green Dragon Pub at Hardraw.

How she loved it, she clearly remembered elements of her stay 30 years ago, it was a wonderful day, gloriously sunny and warm. Shame Hawes itself was heaving but we didn't expect anything else.

Happy days indeed.

Just got back! Went away on Saturday morning up to Withernsea, stopping at a car boot sale on the way. At Withernsea we hit the small market and then had a potter round the shops before driving upto the beach for the dogs to have a run around and us to have lunch. Even Midge had a little potter then he got a bit of a canter going as he headed for the steps off the beach and back to the van! On to Hornsea Freeport (discount outlet for major clothing & other types of shops). Then off to north side of Hornsea to chip shop for tea ... yummie fish & chips & scraps, peas, bread & butter and cup of tea ... wonderful! Back to south side of Hornsea and parked in large car park behind the grass knolls with 3 other motorhomes - dogs had a lovely potter around, then played dominos and checkers before watching a bit of video then bed. Weather was very cold and raining on and off all day, not too windy though fortunately.

Today, overcast and cool with some spots of rain so off to Skirlington where the is always a very large market and car boot on a Sunday. Had a good potter around in the sunshine - yes there was some ... very briefly before more spots of rain - pretty much like this all day. We had lunch then off up the coast and stopped south of Bridlington at a beach within a holiday complex and had a lovely potter with the dogs - stuck Midge in his buggy for a while (its a pain on sand!) the he had a little potter again and was yet again trying to get to the ramp to get back to the camper ... little s*d can move when he wants to! After a nice warming cuppa, as it was turning colder and more rainy, decided to cut our losses a come home.

Unfortunately loads of other seem to have had the same idea and as we hit Leven to take the Beverley road there was a backlog from the roundabout, we know from experience if the traffic is backed-up there its going to be for the whole of the road to Beverley ... that's 7 miles!!! Turned round quick and took the scenic route through the back lanes (sat nav is great but it does pay to have a good map for times like this so long as you know how to drive your van properly and can 'negotiate' the narrow bridges which are nearly at right angles to the roads - we've done it before so know they were coming this time!), overall it only took about 5 mins or so extra ... much better than sitting in the traffic jam for at least 30mins though.

Nice to be back in our nice warm home, not that the van isn't but it's not much fun having to keep going out in the cold and rain! :D

Glad you had a good trip Mel - Rosie can manage watching a video OK but do you think that, if we asked them nicely, your dogs could teach her to play dominoes and chequers please, as a bit of competition would brighten up a dull day and it would certainly give the neighbours something to talk about?
