Cleaning yellowed GRP

Hi Folks

First post for a long long time.

We have a motor van that we bought ten years ago which we wash two or three times a year and give a bit of a polish in the spring with an ordinary wipe on wipe off polish.

The sides of our Van are alloy and have retained their colour and shine but all of the fiberglass areas have now yellowed and become matt. The company that we use to do our habitation service suggested using a coa**e cutting compound followed by a fine one follwed by a hard variety of polish. We are very unsure about cutting back so hard and suspect this would result in irrepairable damage to the gel coat. So , has anyone had the experience of cutting back gel coats or got any usefull Ideas about recreating the colour and appearance our van had when new.

Hopefully!!

Yes, use Faraclae G10 and a rotory mop, brings it up a treat. Have some G3 to hand as well for very stuborn area's but use carefully. Follow that with a good polish with Starbrite, which is a GRP boat cleaner wax specifically designed for GRP (or any other painted or metal surface as found on boats) and gives an excelent finish.

If you do not want to try a compound you could try using Autoglym Engine and Machinery cleaner first as that may well be sufficient to bring back the colour. Failing that

Both of the above methods have been used by me to very good affect with no damage to the GRP at all.

Farécla products are recommended by Auto-Sleepers for maintaining their motorhomes' appearance and are widely used in the automotive and marine trades. If you GOOGLE on "farecla" you'll find their website and various suppliers.

GRP 'yellowing' and loss of shine have been discussed before on the forum, most recently (I believe) on

Yep, and I've given up on trying to get rid of it. Have tried Farecla, and various other GRP/Fibreglass/Marine stuff that had been recommended and nothing would shift it.
