Guest Tracker
Does anyone know of a list of all available potentially free channels showing which are available on which system please? We have both Freeview and an old sky system (with free to view card) and I am trying to determine which of the the different satellite set ups - if any - will give us the best range of alternative channels to Freeview for a one off payment and without subscription. Freesat or Free to air via Sky, or free to view via Sky or Free to air or free to view via any other make of satellite digibox? Confused? So am I! Guest Tracker
J9withdogs - 2009-04-16 7:56 PM Have you tried asking Mr Google? Yes - and after about an hour of following unhelpful links I gave up and decided to ask the forumites instead as no doubt I am not the first to ask this question and I bet a shilling that someone will know where to find it (the list I mean!). Randonneur
Have a look at the following: http://www.ses-astra.com/consumer/en/channel-guide/index.php This will give you all the channels with a satellite setup. This may give you more answers as well: http://www.lyngsat-address.com/radio/United-Kingdom.html We have Sky in the house and use an ordinary Maplin digibox in the motorhome. There is a digibox called a Dreambox that allows you to put any subscription card in without moving the original box. i.e. Sky box with Sky Sports Subscription - you can just put the card into the Dreambox without moving the Sky box. Confused? So am I! A difficult question to answer. The terminology "Freeview" refers solely to the broadcast digital dervices transmitter via terrestial based transmitter network in UK and is received by roof mounted TV aerials, not satellite dishes. There are numerous makes of set top box designed to receive Freeview in conjunction with existing TVs "Freesat" is a consortium set up by BBC and ITV in opposition to Sky to provide Digital TV services carried by a satellite in the same orbital position in the sky as the Sky services. It was to carry non subscription services (free to air )and complement Freeview transmissions and provide coverage where terrestial network coverage was poor or non existent. The Freesat concept specified the technical details for transmission and 4 receiver manufacturers were the first to design and produce relevant equipment, and can be identified by carrying a Freesat logo on them Other manufacturers make similar equipment and can receive the channels but may not have the same Electronic Programme Guide built in some Freesat receivers have the capability to receive High Definition broadcasts . "Freesat" programmes can also be received on Sky boxes, and Sky confuse the issue by claiming "freesat from Sky.". A Sky box can be purchased but generally lead to a Contract and monthly payments for services. A wider range of programme choice is available but expensive. All the satellite uk services are carried by the Astra2 range of satellites in orbit position 28.2 east of south. A google search for LYNGSAT will lead to technical details of which service is on what frequency, and what scrambling system is in use, who the provider is and full technical details of frequencies, FEC, Polarity etc. European services are available in uk by repositioning the dish to look at astra1 19.2 east, or Hotbird at 13 east It is a minefield for mr average to decide which is "best " for him as high street suppliers flog Sky, and cant sensibly offer anthing else as they are not technically trained to understand the differences If you think that sometime in the future you might be willing to pay Sky, then a Sky box will be the preferred option with the cheapest viewing card. It can be upgraded in the future to receive paying services if you wish, whereas Freesat Boxes wont receive Sky paying services in the future. colin
colin - 2009-04-16 8:25 PM Try these http://www.freesat.co.uk/index.php?page=whatson.Main http://www.freeview.co.uk/freeview/Channels p.s. http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/freesat-tv-choice.aspx Just noticed you also asked about FTA. FTA recievers should pick up all freesat channels (except possibly ITV HiDef) just that they won't be automaticaly arranged 'neatly' like you may be used to. Note that at moment there is a shortage of SD Freesat recievers and some retailers are asking a premium for them. If you are considering HD at home it may be worthwhile buying a Freesat HD box, I think they all run off 12v tranformers(check) so can be swopped to van easily. Guest Tracker
Thanks for the replies and without wishing to sound ungrateful for all the efforts that you have made to help may I say that I was already aware of all of these linked websites and unfortunately they all promote only their own system without allowing a fair comparison - what are they hiding the cynic in me asks? Without physically making a list from each website and trying to compare by elimination I still cannot find a comparative list which shows which set up will receive which channels. However it does seem that a non Sky 'free to air' box might offer the best solution and as we have an HD TV we may as well be a tiny bit future proof and have an HD free to air satellite box too. We will not bother with it in the van as we can't be bothered messing about setting it all up - and we go tend to go away to escape the wretched thing! As far as we are concerned TV in the van is just something to do when there is nowt else to do and no programme is ever 'unmissable' enough to worry about missing - life's too short - so we carry a box of DVDs just in case boredom sets in - but it never does!
