cruiser
Question...first time out this season in our 2004 Rimor on the Ford Transit. Everything fine except the engine seems to falter under hard acceleration in second and third, almost like there was a fuel restriction. Gentler acceleration shows no problem and other than this the engine seems perfect. Any ideas? (Filled the tank with diesel last September before parking up for the winter...relevant?) Comment....put stick-on beam deflectors on last year..thought the headlamps were glass. Not so, had trouble removing the deflectors this year and had to use solvol autosol on the headlamp lenses to remove the damage. Warning....watch out for Summer hanging baskets! Parked in Killarney today, all clear,,,then the car in front pulled away so I eased forward, not seeing the (metal) hanging flower basket sticking out up the lampost. Scrapes and dents along the awning. My fault...but managed to pass blame onto herself as she wanted to nip into Dunnes stores hence the parking requirement. As your motor is apparently happy except for what you've mentioned, I doubt if it's anything to do with 'old' fuel. Could be lots of reasons for the 'faltering', but I think it would be a waste of effort attempting a remote diagnosis. Even if you provided a thousand-word-long description of the fault (starting with exactly which motor your Transit is fitted with!) I'd still want to drive it to see what it's doing. You could try getting it well warmed up, then thrashing it really hard in the lower gears to see if that does any good, but if the problem persists, then I think that it will need to go on a diagnostic machine. donna miller
I would check the inline pre-filter and also consider changing the main one, gentle acceleration draws the fuel through at a steadier rate, so may not pull cr4p up and restrict the flow. Hi Cruiser Not sure of your location. In the UK the Oil Companies put an additive to Diesel for winter to prevent waxing. If your fuel was put in last September, it is quite possible it was before the dewaxing additive was introduced for the winter season. I suspect therefore there is some waxing in your fuel system. I would start by checking the filters, but it may require other cleaning work on the fuel pipes & injector pump.
cruiser
Thanks all. I fitted a new fuel filter today. It was so easy, even a child could do it. Now it won't start. How do I bleed it? I know now that I should have filled the filter with diesel first. Perhaps I should have got a child to do it. For an explanation of my thread title, check out 'a question, a comment and a warning' on this page. There are some really funny folk out there! Derek Uzzell
Suggest you remove the filter, fill it with fuel, replace it and try again. There are dire warnings in my Transit Mk 6 Owner's Guide about dealer assistance being required (and possible engine damage occurring) if a diesel motor is allowed to run out of fuel, and that the fuel system will need to be re-primed. No details are given as to how this should be done. Whether trying to start the motor with a 'dry' filter constitutes "running out of fuel" as far as the engine and engine management system is concerned is anybody's guess. It also needs saying that Transit Mk 6 fuel-filters are not all the same and that common-rail motors should be fitted with a better (and much more expensive) filter than non-common-rail powerplants. I've no idea which motor is fitted to your motorhome - or even if the vehicle is rear- or front-wheel drive as Rimor was building on both chassis formats in 2004. I also remember being told that there is a tendency for Transit Mk 6 fuel-filters to leak if not fitted carefully. Probably your best port of call (other than a Ford dealership) for really expert Transit-related advice would be the Ford Transit forum http://fordtransit.org/forum/
cruiser
Thanks Derek. Filled the new filter with diesel and turned the engine for about ten seconds and hey presto! Checked fitting thoroughly, no leaks but will keep an eye on it. Thanks again, and you're right about the Transit forum. Full of tips. Oh, by the way, check out my other thread.....'a question.....etc' where you get an special mention!
