Satellite and free channels

I thought I would mention the fact that to receive the "free to air" channels using a satellite receiver and dish YOU DO NOT NEED A SKY BOX.

All you need is a satellite receiver, dish and some proper coax cable and of you go.

I know a lot of you know all about it, but after a couple of conversations with people whilst out and about it was apparent that not all are so informed.

Maplin, Lidl and many others sell a complete suitcase system for about £70.

thanks for posting the tip.

Am I right on thinking its an extendable pole with a dish on top that free stands outside the motor home with a lead back to the TV.

Is the receiver the part that sits in the centre of the dish? and to tune in you just push the dish round till it picks up the signal.

any drawbacks as I am intrested.

As a self confessed satellite expert, I would, for the novice warn against the 'suitcase systems'.

They can be the most frustrating things to set up and of course, often the time you want the TV is when weather is bad. It's no fun when it's raining.

The receiver that comes with the 'suitcase' kits, however is an excellent piece of kit and now that Four and Five are FTA it's well worth having.

I would recommend at least a TTR (through the roof) or a Crank-up, which I have. So much easier to set up and from the comfort of the MH.

I believe the 'suitcase' receivers (branded Silvercrest/Comag) can be bought separately from large DIY stores. They are easily available in France and Spain for about 30-40€.

Of course if you're travelling in mainland Europe a Sky box is the best option as there are 'Sky' versions of some of the main UK terrestrials which broadcast on wider beams.

OK Derek, I am no expert but I have found the Lidl suitcase set up to be excellent, I can find the Astra 28.2 North Beam down as far as Roses in Spain with a watchable picture, and that's with the supplied standard dish, mounted with rubber suckers on my side window. It now takes me about 2 minutes to find Astra, I must admit that when I started it took a bit (lot) longer.

The signal meter in the Comag software is very good, I don't even use a separate meter now.

A crank up system is a nice thing to have, but at £300 plus drilling a hole in my roof or having it fitted is a non starter for me.

P.S. Do not look at Arabsat, disgusting filth!

Derek,

I have used Sky in Europe for four years with a 2 Mtr. dish on my wifes house. I'm afraid to say that the FTA channels (Like BBC & ITV) have been on Astras 'spot' beam since about 2005 and are therefore impossible to receive in the far reaches of Europe (e.g. Germany & Poland etc)

I would be very interested to know what foorprint these 'free' FTA channels get using a MH roof mounted dish. Can anyone confirm that the BBC & ITV are available via these satelites (Not Sky) all over Europe????

I didn't say all over Europe. Nor did I say FTA. They're FTV.

There are five regions of ITV on Astra 2b North at 12402 V, 27500, 2/3

There are four Channel Fives along with Five US and Fiver on Astra 2a South at 12422 H, 27500, 2/3.

There is Channel 4 and E4+1 on Astra 2a North at 12480 V, 27500, 2/3.

All of the above can be picked up with a Sky box and valid viewing card. No sub needed.

Have you ever watched Arab sat? Unlike Hotbird there are no porn channels on Arabsat. Arabsat has the MBC channels - MBC2, 4, Action and Persia broadcast in english with arabic subtitles. The programmes are - MBC2 = Films (many of which have even the swear words blanked out and often any risque scenes are cut), MBC4 = Kids cartoons, MBC Action = As the name implies - action programmes and films e.g. NCIS, Law and Order etc. Other channels on Arabsat are Fox Movies, Bahrain tv, Bahrain Sport, Bahrain 55, - Again they also blank swearing and cut sex scenes. Press tv (just like watching sky news), Dubai 1 (Old hollywood movies (before the F word became popular.

All in all I would let the kids watch Arabsat long before I would take parental controls off Sky.
