Recommendations for family campsites

I am looking to plan a trip to the south west (starting in Nottingham) - for 4 weeks ish in a motorhome - can anyone recommend any good (reasonably priced) family campsites (either in south west or on the way) - we are looking for a good childrens play area, on site shop and somewhere interesting close by that we can cycle to. Thanks

Depends what you're after doesn't it? The CC, of which I'm a member, offer a very high standard of site. It's not cheap either, it's highly regulated, (which suits us) so you're nigh on guaranteed no riff raff. Don't expect bouncy castles etc either, you'll be lucky to find an extremely safe play area.

Both "big" clubs offer CL's and CS's which are 5 van only sites, generally on farms, large gardens that sort of thing. Basic facilities only but some offer club site standards these days. Not that suited for kids though, but some perhaps near the sea side would suffice?

I've only been on 2 or 3 CCC sites, perhaps we were unlucky but I clearly remember children whizzing around on mini motos, barking dogs etc. If that was the CC, you'd be shot dead or asked to leave at the very least..

I'm a member of both clubs and hardly ever use any of their sites, preferring to use Certified Locations wherever possible, and that is with a kid. We stayed on one on saturday night and we were the only campers on site - it was bliss and our 7yo loved it as she got to fly her kite and ride her bike without the moaning minnies having a go!

I'd recommend also using some of the temporary holiday sites that both clubs offer - cheap, cheerful and with a nice mix of people who will actually socialise with you rather than staying cooped up in their caravans/motorhomes watching Eastenders and Corrie, then looking out their windows and tutting at every deviation from their extremely high standards.

However, both clubs do really crap, badly-laid-out books of camp sites.

Hiya

We belong to the CCC, we attend most weekend rallies they do, when you join you get a BIG SITE BOOK which gives you details of majority of the sites in this country.

Monthly you get another magazine which includes all the weekend rallies for the various regions. Also details of all the THS's (temporary holiday sites) they are well worth going to, most don't have toilet/shower facilities nor electric, but some beautiful locations, some do have these facilities though. All reasonably cost.

I'm from the South West area, so let me know what area you are planning to visit and I can tell you some good sites.

Wadebridge/Polzeath area is a lovely area, and it isn't far from the Camel trail which goes from Bodmin - Wadebridge - Padstow. There is a THS in ST Minver during August - a beautiful spot!! You can walk down to the beach from the site, your near Polzeath, Rock and Wadebridge. Ferry goes over from Rock to Padstow.

There are lots of campsites around that area, Little Bodieve in Wadebridge is a nice site, clean and flat, has shop and also a small club room, outdoor pool and outdoor flume. In the busy season, it does tend to cram everybody in though. They have a rally field there too, I'm sure on DA goes there during the holidays.

Pentuan Sands and Tregarton Park, (between St Austell and Mevagissey) are also nice campsites. Pentuan has it own private beach and again is right on a bike trail, Tregarton is just around the corner from there, clean, flat, kids play park, tennis........ exceptionally showers.

I could go on and on,. let me know what areas you are looking at!!

I am a member of both Caravan Club and Camping and Caravanning Club and both do have facilities for children. If you do not wish to join the clubs until you have tried them then they are open to non members, although you will pay a slightly larger fee. Both clubs have websites and you can use their sites directories by Region. Visit www.caravanclub.co.uk or www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk. I prefer the caravan Club but the Camping and Caravanning Club does appear to be more family freindly and tolerant. However, there are lots of other Commercial sites. Look at your proposed route and where you think you want to stay and then go on the Internet (any search engine, Google, Ask etc) and type in "Campsites near ..........?"

Wherever you go just enjoy you will soon get to know what to look for on a site, or in a region :D
