There is a good "sosta" at Bonassola, on the Cinque Terra coast just north of La Spezia, which is right next to the beach and costs 12€ for the night, but quite popular and may not be open on the high season.

The problem with this stretch of the Italian coast, like many other stretches, is that the coastal strip is narrow and wedged between the mountains and the sea. All the habitation is crammed into this narrow strip and, unless you use the motorway, progress is painfully slow. The main road, the Via Aurelia, is a constant succesion of towns and villages. Because it is all fairly densely inhabited there are not many places you would term beautiful. The only bit is the Cinque Terra and because of this any stopping place there is expensive. Go to http://www.camperonline.it/ for a list of "sostas" in Liguria for more suggestions and to http://www.turismoitinerante.com/php/sosta/italia/mappe.php for a map. You may need an Italian dictionary.

We drove from Bogliasco (just east of Genova) to Torre de Lago Puccini (just north of Pisa), last October.

We used the SP1 (Via Aurelia) and did the journey in a leisurely day's drive, stopping at various towns on route. On the whole it was an attractive route.

Although taking on board advice on the forums, we did the whole of our Italian trip without using toll roads.
