We are in the process of buying a motorhome in Spain , which is registered in Spain and are having major problems insuring it for fully comp or 3rd party fire and theft. All we camn get is 3rd party only which is not what we want. Has anyone experienced this and if so how was it resolved. All advice very welcome.

Thanks *-)

Hi Sue -

We live in inland Costa Blanca region in Spain and have owned 2 Motorhomes here.

Our current MH is Spanish registered, and I found the best fully comp quote was from Abbeygate Insurance.

They do a Fully Comprehensive policies, but since 2008 their cover doesn't include Breakdown/Recovery any more.

(Other Companies such as RACC etc in Spain do this cover though)

Abbeygate have an office in Moraira, Costa Blanca, and speak English and/or Spanish. I believe they issue policies all across Spain.

Phone: (0034)965 745 097. Ask for Katy.

Worth a try.

There is one other specialist MH insurer in Spain that I am aware of, based in Barcelona.......but for me they were more expensive at last renewal, and they only speak Spanish (don't know how good your Spanish is?)

NB: I have no connection with Abbeygate, other than as a (so far) happy customer.

Edited to add: I suspect the reason why you are finding it hard to get any cover quotes for risk beyond third party only is that because vehicle insurance is rather....no, very... expensive in Spain.....people keep crashing!.....most people here go for third party only, thus there is not the same level of demand for TPF&T or Fully Comp cover here.

Hi Brian Its the cover itself causing the problem it seems here in Spain the most common cover is 3rd party only and with this being our first motorhome we need more cover I will try Abbeygate as suggested by BGD

Thanks

Hi

Try the people below who insure mine it will be dearer than UK. value 50,000e 2.3 litre is 525 euros a year inc breakdown cover with Liberty Securos but at least you save on your road tax

Not all brokers or insurance companies in Spain will take Motorhomes so you do have to shop arround.

Sue - I've just answered the private email that you sent me, and I've included some contact details for some insurers and Breakdown Insurance Companies........Hope they help.

Don't forget that Google is God for locating any such things too.

If you want to Google for the company that Colin has mentioned (they seem pretty good: I've got my car and motorbike insured with them at the moment but didn't think they covered MH's....maybe it's just 'cos our MH is extremely venerable!), I think their name is actually "Liberty Seguros"

Hasta luego,

Bruce.

Hi Brian Thanks for this I have been quoted this amount just for 3rd party only. I will email to the address and hope they get back to me as we are buying the MH on Monday. Lost time expecting to use present owners insurance company but they no longer do fully comp.

Hi Colin An update on our insurance , emailed as you suggested but got a reply to say they only insure for 3rd party. We have got insurance with Allianz.es and breakdown cover combined so are happy and now proud owners of a MH. Planning our first trip for this weekend. Keeping close to home for the first few trips to find our feet , can't wait. Thanks to all for the advice given and probably be asking for more advice along the way.

WE had a Spanish motor home in Spain after it was 10 years old , we had to have it MOT every six months , then had it stolen never got a penny from the insurance, got a English address a English motor home, insurance cover by Saga, seems a lot better solution.
