canvaswind
We have recently purchased a low mileage 2003 Autocruise Starspirit, based on a Peugeot Boxer. We find both cab seats very uncomfortable – especially the passenger's seat. Both seats are fitted with one arm rest. The driver's seat has 5 adjustments: travel, rake, back lumbar and 2 tilts (front and back of seat). The stuffing feels hard and unforgiving. The passenger's seat has only travel and rake adjustment. The lack of lumbar and tilt adjustment makes it difficult to get comfortable and there is minimal support at the lower back. The stuffing is also hard. The height of a swivelling seat doesn't help the situation but we intend to remove it. Can anyone help with following questions: 1. Are these seat likely to be the originals fitted by Peugeot and reupholstered by Autocruise? 2. Is it practical to find and fit a driver's side seat on the passenger side and therefore get the additional adjustments? 3. Does anybody know of a company specialising in motorhome seats who could provide a replacement frame for the passenger side? Or a company who would restuff and upholster the existing frames so that the van is useable for long distance driving? Failing any of these options, a company who would provide two comfortable replacements seats at a reasonable price? Any help would be much appreciated either by email or phone to 07799 51 83 92. davenewellhome
To answer your questions in order: 1/ yes it is likely that they are standard Peugeot seats. 2/ depends on your abilities with a spanner and socket really. 3/ try these guys, but they're not cheap! http://www.tekseating.co.uk/ D. Happycamper
We have an 03 Autocruise Wentworth, also on the Peugeot Boxer, and the seats are great, are you sure yours haven't been abused by a couple of overweight joy riders?
Guest Tracker
We've too have always found Boxer/Ducato seats to be fine - best way to check before spending a fortune is to sit in another van? Most car breakers keep good front seats and as the fitting to the Boxer bases or seat swivels is very easy to adapt you might be able to find a nice pair to fit. They might not conform strictly to the letter of the construction and use regs but as long as the original fitting locations and high tensile bolts are used that should not pose any great problems? lennyhb
Seats are very individual what is comfortable to one can be back crippling to someone else. Here is another supplier as mentioned they are expensive min £500 a seat over £1000 for really good ones. http://www.thevanshop.com/ A couple of companies here that may be able to re-cover and fit new foam to suit your requirements. http://www.foam.co.uk/ http://www.master-trim.co.uk
Mel B
They do sound like the originals but they are usually fairly comfortable. Be wary of going down the route of having them re-stuffed and upholstered which can be very expensive and doesn't always solve the problem. We had a Nissan Almera and the seats, from new, were bl**dy uncomfortable for me - hubby was fine ... l typical! After spending over £50 (this was a while ago!) for the foam to be reshaped and new foam added, it didn't do a thing for it and instead I ended up making a nice cushion overlay with some foam which did the job for less than £5! Why not get hold of a cheap memory foam mattress topper (usually at markets for around £40 max for a double) and see if you can do a removable overlay for them yourself, you'll find that some cheap car seat covers will fit the seats to keep the stuff in place and they have the advantage of protecting the original seat upholstery. We also use some of those waterproof type covers (navy) on top (£10 for 2 from motorhome shows) which we can remove if they get grubby and clean easily (we have dogs!).
