Camping Albufeira is a pretty popular site in that neck of the woods. The pitches are only fair, unless your lucky, but the toilets and facilities are good. It also has the advantage of being only a short walk into the town.

When we toured Portugal last spring (Feb), we travelled all up the Atlantic coast as far as Porto and then toured inland too; and used the ACSI card.....and we were very impressed with the standard of the ACSI card sites we stayed on, and also with the prices using the card.

There are dozens of Portugese sites (and a few Spanish ones on the Western side of Spain) that are in the ACSI campsite book that comes with the card.

Most sites, even right on the coast, were only 11 euros with the card. (A couple were 13, or the top wahck 15 euros). That price gets you a pitch for your MH with electric hookup, two adults, tap water, plus free showers.

I was also surprised at how many of the sites ahd staff who spoke English (even "out of season") when we rang ahead to check on prices/opening times/pitch availability.

We speak Spanish, but in most cases did not need to use it for phone enquiries, nor for talking to reception staff once on site.

Maybe worth a look at the ACSI card if you're going over there too......it saved us a LOT of site costs over a 14 night tour.

(Just one note of caution: the ACSI card is valid for a calendar year, not for 12 months from when you get it; ie the 2009 card expires 31.12.09)

Hi Barrie, hope you are well, phone Carefree and get the Winter Sun brochure, all the info you want is in there, in three months you could try all the Portugal Rallies . we looked in on all the Rally sites when we were in Portugal a couple of years ago, they are all OK, we had a few nights on each but independantly, I think we prefered OLAEHO [probably spelt that incorrectly ]as it was very convenient for the town, and lots of boat trips from the harbour and good cheap restaraunts nearby. I thought the Alberfera site was a long way from town ,but a previous poster says it close ,The Alberfera site was badly flooded when we called in and a lot of awnings were in large puddles, take the high ground as they say, Bon Voyage. :-o :-o

I would get the ACSI book, well worth it. The Orbitur sites are in the book and good value, also you will find free WI-Fi in most (if not all) of Portugal, we spent a good holiday there in May/June, and will certainly go back next year.

Malc is correct on two counts. At Albufeira the centre of town is about forty minutes away but there are shops, restaurants, etc, within about fifteen minutes of the camp. Sorry about that. Also the lower ground does get flooded, which is probably why the they don't do much with it. You will need to go out in November to bag a decent pitch, but this usually applies to most popular overwintering sites. But again, you could get lucky.
