Lots of thread regards wintering in Spain at the moment. I’m kind of thinking of heading south solo for a few months, I’m between jobs so rather then hang :-S about here, I may try it on my own.......*-)

Wife has started a new job, but she can fly over October half term and if I am still down that way Christmas as well. Have never travelled on my own so not sure if I am up to it, but willing to give it a try rather then being idle and bored here.......

Some specific worries/questions:

Alicante region seems popular?

Recommendations please for sites to head for?

What would I have to pay for a decent site per week?

Campsites open in winter on route and in Spain. How do you find them? will use Aires in France...

Do they have TV connection on some sites? As I don’t have a roof dish

Will I find people willing to talk to socialise with? As I am not really a loner. Is there a social scene on popular sites?

I have my E bike so getting around no problem.

I have refillable gas bottles. Are there garages in Spain that sell LPG at the pump?

I saw a route on here for west coast of France to Pamplona/Zaragoza/Alicante. So this will probably be OK for me. I might even try North Africa! :-S

Hi Judge,

Try http://en.campings.com/spain/camping-spain.htm

El Raco camping. www.campingraco.com/ is a good one, if you stay longer than 30 days the rate is about £400 per month, this includes Sat TV, and enough electric for average usage.

La Torreta. http://www.campings.com/camping-torreta-benidorm/?idlengua=3

is nearer Benidorm but a little scruffy, but cheaper,( not that it would concern a Toff like you Me’Lud,) the natives are all very sociable .

Gas for refillables is not as widely available, better to get hold of a Repsol Spanish cylinder, you are supposed to give a local address but a campsite does just as well,

It’s very good value at around 15 euro for a 13 kg refill.

I like the West coast route, lots of Aires, and no need to use the Peage.

Regards PKC.

hi judge,

we were in benidorm for the winter this year and stayed at camping villasol which is the closest site to benidorm centre ( just up the road from la toretta, mentioned above).it's a lovely site, they don't allow dogs though.as for lpg,i have a list of places where you can get it,the closest to benidorm being the one we used which is in alicante.it is on the main route through to malaga,so you don't even have to make a detour if you are going south anyway.i have the address if you need it,i'll look it up for you.

There is a social scene at Villasol mentioned above. Quiz nights are quite a good way of meeting people; just arrive and someone will let you in their team. Having said that I'm completely unsociable but nevertheless do like Camping Villasol as Benidorm does offer quite a lot for winter stays.

Hi Judge -

This one is excellent: Calpe Mar campsite in Calpe.

http://www.campingcalpemar.com/en/inicio_camping_calpemar.html

Calpe is about 20kms north of Benidorm, and a long long way from Benidorm in terms of atmosphere.

We've stayed there, and know several friends who have too.

Almost brand new site, facilities (showers, toilets, washing machines, hookup, water tap and grey waste drain on every pitch, etc) are utterly first class. Security guard on duty all night.

Very reasonably priced, especially if you wave your ACSI card.

Receptionists speak English.

Literally a two minute walk to seafront prom, 5 minute walk to main commercial centre of Calpe.

You can book ahead too, phone them and they'll reserve a pitch for you, but you can't decree exactly which pitch it'll be.

Highly recommended.

Get a copy of all the Aires Spain & Portugal (One Book) from Vicarious Books, if available, it lists all the places that sell LPG, with I believe, GPS co-ordinates. You could also get hold of Caravan Club Europe Brochure and Carefree Winter Rally Brochure (C&CC), these will give you an idea of some sites that are open all year. If you are looking for a Social scene why not consider the Carefree European Sites, you can mix and match sites and they always have things going on. If Bonterra Park (1 Hour North of Valencia) is an 'Open All Year' then I would certainly recommend it, no TV hookup but fully serviced pitch, nice small site, large pitches, good facilities, good location.

Benidorm has never appealed really......simply not my kinda thing *-)

was looking for site recommendations maybe a little further south. have realised if I go I will need an ACSI card.......

If I haven't picked up work (or any hope of work) by end of September will probably give it a bash! 8-)

judge,

we,like you, didn't fancy benidorm much.but after experiencing it, and realising you don't have to mingle with the crowds if you don't want to,we were hooked, mainly because there is everything going on from cycle rides to sunday markets to lovely walks to bowling etc etc or you just get out the barbie, pour the vino and relax.the choice is yours, whereas we found further south, the atmosphere changes, promenades can be deserted.......which means shops and restaurants are closed and prices are generally higher. we are really looking forward to going to benidorm again this winter, but will proberbly drive further south as well.
