Has anybody any further information on the WinTv for use on laptops since the original question was posted sometime ago? In short does it work?! Many thanks. Annie

Hi Annie We've got WinTV on our home pc and it works perfectly on that so I would think it should be the same on the laptop. They do vary in price though, we got ours off an on-line auction site, much cheaper than in the shops. With some you get a proper remote control, but obviously this costs more. Make sure that your laptop is compatible with what you are looking at buying though as I think some of the older laptops aren't, but I'm talking 5 years or so old. We've just treated ourselves to a digital WinTV set-up for our home PC. Not that there is anything wrong with the original analogue TV card which we will just sell on, but we've got used to watching digital TV so wanted it on the PC as well ... my husband is getting addicted to 'Bid TV'!!! We did consider one for our old laptop which was perfectly fine for normal use but unfortunately it wasn't compatible and so we got a flatscreen tv instead. Why not another laptop? We have a small cased PC, about the size of a biscuit tin, which we can take with us in the van instead of the laptop if we want so if the laptop ever dies that's what we'll do. I know I digressed! If you do go for a WinTV card for your laptop and decide on a digital one just remember that it is a bit more fussy as to what the reception is like so you'll have to have a good aerial in your camper.

we have win tv on our laptop, its an IBM T20 cost about £350 from student laptops. Bought a cheap £10 antenna. Its works fine very raely put the antenna up usly put it across the roof vent and find that the recption is pretty good. We always take the lap top its is used as the daily diary, recording camp sites etc. I have jsut installed Autoroute 2006 GPS on it, have had a couple of trial runs and it works fine, also with Autoroute got all CC sites C&c sites, Cls and Cs.sites, also 3500 French camp sites. In short the Win TV is good. Annie Yesterday evening I got round to watching last week's episode of the Gadget Show (channel 5, Mondays, 7.15 pm) and found that they had been assessing ad-ons for laptops, one of the accessories was a usb digital tv receiver. It is made by Freecom and costs about £40.00. You plug it into your laptop and can watch digital tv. If you have a look on the web just type in "usb digital receiver" you'll get a quite few makes, I also found some on eBay. Hope this helps - have fun.

Dear Mel B, Sorry - forgot to ask if this needs USB2. My laptop only has USB1 connections. May have to buy another one! Annie

Annie USB, either 1 or 2, is just a way of connecting and transferring the data from the USB equipment to the laptop, USB2 is the newer version so is a lot faster than USB1. Saying that as far as I know either should be fine (my husband is the computer geek!), it just means that if you have a USB2 version, it will only be able to transfer the data at the USB (slower) rate. But try to get a USB1 version as it should be cheaper. If in doubt take your laptop to a shop that sells both types (PC World) and get them to show you what definitely works with your machine, whether or not you then feel guilty and buy from them is up to you! You could always check out the price for WinTv elsewhere before going and try having a haggle, you never know, it might work if they risk losing a sale!!!
