Rear Seatbelts

Hi all, I have two part question, which I fully expect some very strongly ‘no holds barred’ answers.

I have a June (06) Swift Sundance 590RS (Ducato 2.3JTD)

1. I have 4 belted ‘travelling’ seats. Two in the Cab and two facing forwards in the caravan section. The two rear facing seats have no belts at all.

What’s the legal position for carrying people (not children)?

2. Is it viable to get any kind of belts fitted to the rear facing seats ?

Many thanks,

Clyde

Here's my barrackroom lawyer answer.

What does your inssurance cover you for?

Are the seats actualy suitable for fitment, I would guess not as even the latest model doesn't have them, if they don't have a (proboly steel) frame for the belts they would most like colapse under load, the driver would then get a wooden box with two people strapped in it hitting the back of seat, ouch.

By the way I've been known to carry unbelted passengers in back, for frontal crash they will hit a bulkhead, great for me in the front, not so good for them.

we have the same van. Sold as "5berth" so technicaly you should be able to carry 5 people.I don't see why you can't carry an adult in the rear facing seats, don't think it's illegal.** Not sure what the position is abroad though

I have seen military vehicles with the guys sitting sideways

** You are supposed to use the belted seats first, as I understand it.

Never had more than 4 to travel anyway, and that was only on a shopping trip.
