Wild Camping Aberdovey

We are going  to Aberdovey at the end of October to visit my Aunt who will be 80.  There is not enough space for us to park at her house so we would like to find somewhere fairly near to the town (or in town) to stay for a couple of days.

I wondered if anyone has been there recently and could advise of the attitude to overnight parking and whether there are height barriers to the car parks?

Otherwise, can anyone recommend a site with a bus stop nearby; to travel into Aberdovey and back again?

We stay at the old Celtica SITE AT the south entrance to Machynlleth arriving from Aberystwyth by the mini rounbabout as soon as you hit the town Its on the right SIDE through two large pillar entrance. We will be there this weekend as our daughter lives in Machynlleth. You can also pay to stay overnight in the carparks in Powys. We would tuck in by the reclcling centre by the back of the library in Machynlleth as you are away from the entrance and rugby club there.

You can park a motorhome on the front in Aberdovey as there is actually a motorhome sign for that carpark. dont think you can park overnight on that one but not sure.

Have fun

Check http://www.ukcampsitesearch.co.uk/wales/conwy/winkups-caravan-park-towyn.php Aberdyfi There is no overnighting allowed only vans parked up are locals,The local carparks are patrolled even at this time of the year..Tywyn is only 4 miles away and there is train service. Chris is correct about Machynlleth car park but park away from rugby club house if staying at weekend.Just like most pubs noisey when they leave. should be quiet mid week

Many thanks for your suggestions; we will probably overnight at Machynlleth and drive over to Aberdovey for the day I think.  We can then take the opportunity to visit the eco centre as well.

Hi madmaggot,

Stayed last night at the celtica site but were woken by knocking on van at 5.30 so we shouted, they laughed and walked away but knocked again at 6am on way back. At Celtica they have built commuity housing for young adults and I think we have to park further away from their walking home route. Also it was Friday night so it was party night. They were having a laugh at it so not malicious. We will be back there in couple of nights so will let you know.. Its £5 a night in the carpark otherwise. All the campsites are shut after October.

There is also Coris craft centre carpark 2-4 miles north of Centre for Alternative Technology but we haven't tried that one.

We are currently at Porthmadog in the town and that is £10 a night with electric. Nothing special but great for us motorhomers. Hardstanding too

Hi madmaggot,

We went back to Celtica carpark last night and had a quiet night. This time we went in and parked right opposite the council fenced in area and parked sideways and tucked right in. We were away from the housing then. As you turn into celtica go into the first section of the carpark. There were 2 other vans there last night too.

We had a good nights sleep.

If you have a small van I bet you could get away with parking in Aberdovey. We are now at Aberystwyth and in the last hour 6 motorhomes have pulled into this site. Everywhere but a few will close at the end of the week which is a shame as there are loads of motorhomes round this area. The council should start thinking of aires. Hope you enjoy the party. Let me know where you park up.

ps. Dont think about using public transport on A Sunday as buses dont run and only 2 trains all day. Most buses are every 2 hours anyway. gREAT PART OF THE UK though. Love it

Thanks for the update Chris.

Haha, not really a party; more of a sedate birthday tea!

Planning to overnight at Machynlleth then continue to Aberdovey next day and park in public car park.  Return to Mach for the night and use the bus on Saturday to go to the Centre for Alt Tech and back.

Where we go on Sunday depends on the weather; home on Monday.

You can take the van to CENTRE ALTERNATIVE tECHNOLOGY as they have a big carpark. Turning in looks narrow but it opens out. There is a campsite right next to it but we havent used it. It may or may not be open this weekend.

Have fun.

Many thanks for the excellent tip re. the Celtica car park Chris.  On Thursday we parked on the public car park on arrival at about 3.00 pm and couldn't be bothered to move so spent the night there.  It was ok and the WC attendant was very obliging with filling up our drinking water containers from his office tap!  Just the usual boy racers at about 9 - 10 pm but quiet thereafter.

We used the Celtica car park on Friday and Saturday nights, moving the van to the public car park for the day as we like to use public transport and back again between 6-7 pm.  It was very quiet (despite the haloween festivities) and felt secure, also it's sheltered from the high winds that we had on saturday night.

Once again showing the value of this forum; we wouldn't have known to overnight there without your tip, so thanks.
