I've just been looking through the new mag, and the review on the Autotrail Apache.

My guess is Autotrail are probably wishing they had dressed the van for the photo of the kitchen. Who's scruffy kettle and pans were used for the shot? That old awful red whistling kettle and aluminium pans on a reasonably nice but an old fashioned "grandma" type full slot in cooker!

Was Andy Stothert responsible? quite possibly.

If you had bothered to read it properly you will see the test was by George Hinton. Couldn't see anything wrong with the red kettle either.

I know the test was by George, please try and get a sense of humour transplant when you're next out. I was commenting on the 'photo and the "dressing" of the van with the scruffy kettle and pans. I generally think that the photo's in reviews are poor, you know silly wide-angle shots that don't work etc

Perhaps George or the Caravan Club can't afford Alessi? I guess Autotrail could and they should get a professional to dress their vans prior to a shoot, rather than see these tatty items in a swish new van. It would have been ok in a 15 yr old whatever.

I don't think you can blame anyone for taking your post seriously considering you have consistently criticized magazine test reports in the past.

Personally I can see nothing wrong with the kettle and pans, maybe old fashioned but certainly not tatty, and more true to life anyway. Most owners would transfer their existing gear from their old van into a new one, not buy 'designer' gear.

As for the photography wide angle shots are necessary to show the layout of the 'van and how and where cookers etc are placed within it. A close up of a cooker could be in any 'van. In addition with limited space (3 pages for the CC mag) only a limited number of photos can be used.

And manufacturers rarely get involved in the actual magazine tests/photography. It could affect the independence of the tester! And please don't tell me they are in the pay of the manufacturers.

The vast majority of the photography in the tests is of a high standard and isn't as easy as some think, I know I've done some.
