maryjames
We are thinking of visiting Provence in early summer with our Autotrail 632.Does this count as a"large vehicle"as I have read the road through the Gorges Du Verun can be difficult for larger vehicles. Any advice gratefully received, (?)

Any advice gratefully received, (?) Hi and welcome. I think you may mean the Verdon Gorge ?( I went through a few years back in a 6m van with no problem). If you don't get any replies from larger van owners on this thread I suggest you stick your query on the " Motorhome Matters" thread which gets more attention. Have a good trip. Mel B
Hi Mary - welcome to the mad house. :-D To be really precise ... they are actually correctly called: Gorges du Verdon. We haven't done these, but we've gone along the side of the Ardeche Gorge (3 times!) and also along the Gorges du Doub which I would imagine are very similar. Our van is 7.14m plus bike rack and we didn't have a problem with either.
spospe
maryjames, to be accurate, the road does not go through the Gorges du Verdon, it goes around the top, so that you can look down (there are many stopping places with Belveders on the Route des Crêtes for this purpose). You should not have much trouble, except for the other tourists, as it can get very busy in the high season. Make sure that you drive clockwise round the "Route des Crêtes" because that section of the road eventually becomes one way. If you want to drive through a gorge, try the Gorges du Tarn. Mikey
Travelled through last year in 7m low profile. Stayed at the aire in Castellane and drove from there. If you look on Google maps (sat)you can see the route with the road cut into the rock. Is passable with care.
Patricia
Obviously if you travel clockwise you will always be driving on the edge so you need a good head for heights! I have driven round it clockwise and found the southern road quieter (towing a small car at the time). The northern road had quite a few lorries on which seemed to be driving at breakneck speed and jumping out of the bends - almost certainly imagination but even so you cannot afford to take your eyes off the road. I drove round in early April. Well worth the visit though but allow several hours so that you can stop at the lay-bys. Good idea to do the south side then stop on campsite by the lake (there is an aire the other side). We spend several days on this site and there are some interesting places to visit. David Dwight
Always do the Gorges du Tarn clockwise, that way you avoid the ovehangs. At the top carry on over the plateau to the Gorges du Jont and have a look at the Griffen Vultures. David

Any advice gratefully received, (?) If, as others have said, you use the clockwise route you will be going with the 'flow' of the tourist coaches. Where they go you should have no problems! Try to avoid getting into the same pattern of stopping that the coaches have otherwise you might find the stopping areas/viewing points quite crowded. kevina
We drove the south side (anticlockwise) in November without any trouble in a 7.4m Rapido although it was late in the day and we ended up driving out in the dark. see photos. ps there is an excellent new Aire at Comps-Sur-Artuby which isn't in the books.
