Phishing Scam

I had a E.Mail from Abbey National Bank today telling me my account had been locked and to click on a link to log into my account.

As I don't have an account with them it's a scam. I had a look at the source of the mail and it's the Czech Republic.

I don't know how people are still being caught out with these scams after all the warnings for all these years.

Just be warned if you do have an account with them. If you get a message and are not sure, ring the bank or log on to their official website. Dont open any link and put in your details. Your bank would not ask you for them online.

Wise advice Peter.

We had a letter arrive in the post from a firm "RHF Productions Ltd" shortly after we upgraded our Sky box to Sky+ a while back.

It said that we had "registered" with them and that we had "indicated that we would pay by credit card" but that the payment had been "DECLINED" and requested that we complete the DDM or the Credit Card instructions overleaf.

A quick google led me to a Forum for Sky users who confirmed that this firm somehow manages to get hold of Sky users details when any change is made. It is not likely to be Sky itself (but could be) - more likely the fact that Sky subs out work to sub-contractors and somewhere in this transaction there is a little scumbag who is filtering off people’s details for this scam.

So if anyone else gets such a letter ignore it.

The return address is a PO Box in Kirkcaldy Fife.

But the registered office is

RHF Productions Ltd

First Floor

Orviss House

Queen Street

St Helier

Jersey JE2 4WD

They say they are Jersey registered - number 77483

Whatever!

It is still a scam.

So beware :-S

One of the 'earliest' technology scams was to do with fax machines, when we got the first one at work, I used to look after it - sending and receiving the faxes and charging out for the use of it.

One day we got an 'invoice' for our listing in a 'fax directory', like Yellow pages, but national ... I hadn't given any info about our fax, neither had anyone else, and we'd never seen the so called directory. So, it got mentioned at a higher level to be brought up at a regional meeting to warn other organisations in a similar field of the scam.

I bet a lot of places fell for it though - it was enough money to make it worth their while, but not enough to warrant a lot of questions.

We keep getting calls from an internet listing company who claim we used them to improve our Google response last year and its due for renewal. When we say we've never used them or heard of them they get abusive so we just hang up. They have then phoned back a few moments later but not spoken so we just put the phone on the desk for a few minutes till they hang up, its costing them money to keep phoning us and there's no way we're ever going to pay them anything but I'd dearly love to find out who they really are and where.

All these scams rely on catching someone unawares, with the email phishing scams they send out thousands and thousands, if only a small percentage fall for it then it pays off for them.

Would it be worth reporting it to BT as a nuisance call Dave?

Maybe Rich but we're in the process of moving to Talk Talk/Tiscali or whoever they are this week so BT may not be terribly interested. They're only a minor nuisance now as we just say NO THANK YOU firmly and hang up.

Do watch out for the phone calls purporting to be from a "survey" - Best to say no thank you and put the phone down.

They are usually from abroad (you can tell by the pauses on the line and the accent - despite their saying their name is David Watts or Ben Sherman or similar) and I would not let them have any info at all.

I have only ever had one very rude and aggressive call and that was from a firm who rang me to ask if I had ever had an endowment mortgage and did I want to claim for miselling?

I said truthfully - no and why was he ringing me as it is against the rules to make unsolicited calls re mortgages. At that point he turned very nasty and did exactly what Dave indicates above in that when I put the phone down he rang straight back and carried on being rude.

So I just started laughing and put it on speaker phone so we could all hear and tell him what we thought of him.

Very amusing to hear his attitude change so abruptly when he realised he was being listened to by more than just one person!

I thought about this last night and I think if he phones me again I'm just going to say "Please hold while I connect you to the person responsible for advertising" then I'm going to put the phone in front of the radio for ten minutes, hopefully it will be boring Jeremy Vine as its usually during lunchtime that they phone :D .

Always getting e-mails from banks I've never dealt with nor have I ever enquired about accounts with.

The latest was yesterday from HSBC. It started wih "Dear Customer" which is always a bad sign. I didn't bother checking the header file I just hit block and delete.

;-)

We had the same one from HSBC on Friday delivered to our Spam folder I just deleted it but shows you have to be on guard constantly. Carol.

You all seem pretty savvy from reading the posts, however, for those who have a very charitable nature please be alert to the scams that will be asking for donations to the Haiti earthquake disaster fund. I have not seen any yet ! but watch this space !!

Anyone wishing to donate can use the official charities that are on-line or go to local banks with your donation.
