We quite fancy going to Rome in the spring no rush just a liesurely trundle south we do not want to go via Switzerland possibly Chamonix and Mont Blanc tunnel or run further south and use the Frejus tunnel to Genova and then hug the coast down to Rome has anyone used either route and have any idea as to roughly what the tunnel costs would be we always try to avoid toll roads also any advise on Aires in Italy we will be using ACSI / CC sites as well.

If you do not want to use the Frejus tunnel then the pass which skirts the tunnel is very scenic. Large lorries use it si it is ok for M'homes.

There are two nice sites on the lake at Bolsena (100mls north of Rome) Val di Sole and Camping Blue, both are ASCI and the sites have their own beach. We have used Val di Sole several times.

I would reccommend "Camping Happy Village" for your stay in Rome. It is outside the city, but only a 20 minute train ride away, (1 Euro per person) and a free mini bus ride from hesite to and from the station in the nearby town. It is a well run site with very good facilities, some recently upgraded. They also have WiFi or a computer room for inernet access. The staff speak good English, and the pitches are a decent size. The site also accepts ACSI so the cost can be reasonable if you are going in the "off season".

Be very careful of pick pockets on public transport in Italy. They are brazen, and even if you see them and recognise what they are up to, they are very skillfull and can still fool you *-)

route through Belgium - Luxembourg - Basel - Switzerland - Italy is Cheapest and best route IMO including the swiss carnet which is far less then the French tunnels and associated tolls

Last year we had 10 days staying in Flaminia Village, a excellent site, with beautiful marble toilets & showers which were cleaned all day every day spotlessly clean also a large swimming pool, across the road was a large supermarket, also across the road a cycle track so you can cycle into Rome we cycled to the Trevi Fountain, but only the once after that we got the train 16 euro for unlimited travel for the week. I am sure it was a camping cheque site (but I would check) I know it was not overly expensive.

Rome itself was beautiful and lived up to everything we hoped. (any one on pension) take your passport if you are visiting Museums or the Coliseum you can get in for free.

Enjoy your holiday :-)
