neilmac
I've been given a choice by the garage who is carrying out the service on my motorhome of 5W-40 or 15W-40. My choice is for the 5W-40 for the cold start benefits. It's got me wondering what everyone else uses... :-D
Derek Uzzell
Might be worth you asking your garage what make and type of oil they intend to use. You can have 'synthetic', or 'semi-synthetic', or straight 'mineral' (though the last won't be suitable for modern motors). Oils can also be formulated to be particularly suitable for diesel engines or petrol engines. The price can also vary radically, with some oils being startlingly expensive. Normally there's infomation in the vehicle's handbook as to what the manufacturer's recommendations and preferences are. Ford recommends 5W-30 oil for my Transit's motor and received wisdom is that diverging from that 'grade' can cause problems. I provide my own oil when the motorhome is serviced and have found that I can obtain Havoline fully-synthetic 5W-30 oil from Morrisons for around £16 for 5 litres - significantly cheaper than many semi-synthetic oils sold on the highstreet. neilmac
Thanks Derek, I'm not sure of the brand other than it is 'main stream' - I've known the garage for years. The 5W will be synthetic I think as, from memory, semi-synthetic can't be formulated less than 10W, unless that's changed in the last few years. Either way though I'm happy with 5W as, apart from cost, it will be the best option to cover any climate conditions. Happy to be corrected though :-D
davenewellhome
We usually use 10W-40 semi synthetic in 2.8, possibly fully synthetic for the JTD, I'll try and remember to check tomorrow. D.
Derek Uzzell
neilmac - 2010-02-03 6:56 PM The 5W will be synthetic I think as, from memory, semi-synthetic can't be formulated less than 10W, unless that's changed in the last few years. Semi-synthetic oils can go down to 5W. Until last year I used Duckhams QXR 5W-30, which was definitely semi-synthetic, but had to switch to something else as the Duckhams product became, to all intents and purposes, unavailable. There seems to be some argument over whether Havoline Energy 5W-30 (as sold by Morrisons) is actually SYNTHETIC oil or just 'synthetic' oil, but it meets Ford's specification for the Transit, I can lay my hands on it easily, it's price isn't astronomical and my motorhome's engine seems happy enough with it. jacqui
10W-40 Semi synthetic is the correct grade for the 2.8 JTD. D.
