malc d
Poppy - 2010-02-23 11:32 AM In Scotland.Which is the best month to visit april, May or June.Thanks. We were on Skye and Mull in June last year and the weather was very good. A local on Mull told us that the best time on Mull is May, (so could apply to Skye as well ?) magbrin
April - too soon, still cold & wet & windy. May often a good month and no/less midges. June is likely to be warmest, longest light (it hardly gets dark), but likely to have plenty of the little biters.
David Dwight
Weve been to Skye many times, May June July good months to visit never had a problem with midges at those times. October can be good as well. A very good Campsite at Dunvegan, we first used it when we camped and you had to hunt for a level spot, its now been upgraded with good facilities and a lovely view. Been several times, no best time depends on the weather and differant every year. Same with the midge how bad again depends on the weather, we spent a month in Scotland during August 2008 and only had midges one day on the island of Hoy. In August 2009 they were bad on several occasions but only late evening and early morning. At no time have midges been bad enough to stop us going back. We have had midge problems at some time in several UK locations and all over Europe, not sure why the obsession with them in Scotland.
malc d
Poppy - 2010-02-23 11:45 AM Thanks.Much of a midge problem? We had no problem with midges until our final week, on the Scottish mainland in early July. A site I would recommend is at Glenbrittle, down a single track road south of Drynoch. Fairly flat site next to a good beach - plus good walking country.
zeddykay
Visited Skye a few years ago at the end of July, beginning August. We were tent camping at the time and we were plagued to death on Glenbrittle campsite. Never again in July. Visited west coast from Ullapool northwards last May, never saw a midge! Guest Tracker
April is generally too cold for the little beggars especially after a long hard winter. Early May not a lot better weather wise. Late May weather and midgies unpredictable. Early June also unpredictable but midgie when damp, warm and still. Late June weather unpredictable - midgies very predictable! silverback
Back end of May is a good time, we sometimes go for a week at the may bank hol, traffic is no problem, I agree with David the campsite at Dunvegan is nice, lovely views, we dont usually have probs with midges that is not to say there is none!! there is a midge forecast site at www.midgeforecast.co.uk i think :-|
Champstar
Over the past couple of years May has been a really good month for the west coast. Midges are only really a problem where there are trees, water or heather. Try the avon sss it works for us. The weather can be unpredictable as 2 years ago we arrived on Skye in poring rain then the next week it was the hottest place in Brittain....and we never took any shorts :'( :'(
bluebail10
I've holidayd all over the west coast of Scotland & the islands over the last 30+ years, mainly sailing, & we always went in early May, comming back with a tan on many occasions. Sky's not too bad for midges, just keep away from trees especialy near water, but still take skin so soft, just in case. Keith

Ha - we spent two weeks on Beddgelert Forestry Site in June 2009 and the midges were the worst we have ever seen - anywhere. John
