Dordogne week two, where to go week one?

Hi Everyone, it has just been decided or more accurately, decreed, that we head back to the Dordogne again this year on our meandering. Last year we visited the Domme and Sarlet area and thought it was fantastic.

We also had a week at Argeles sur mer on the coast even though I had been advised against it on here. *-)

We re named it "Le Mabelthorpe" and even though we had a good time, won't be going back.

We are again looking for a coastal area for week one before moving on towards the Dordogne to meet some friends.

Any ideas much appreciated, I got it terribly wrong last year so hope to do better, anywhere considered, what about the Bay of Biscay or North coast of Spain? Cheers Kev

Depends on what you like.

If you would like a beach that is a couple of hundred miles long where you can get a mile of it to yourself, visit the coast south of Arcachon/ Gironde estuary. Also has miles of cycle tracks through the coastal forests.

(But the sea can be a bit chilly and a bit rough for swimming so going in the sea in 'controlled ' areas is recommended).

Vendee coast - nice but busy.

North coast of Spain - very nice - quieter the further you go west ( or is was when we went) - with added bonus of the Picos Mountain range just a few miles inland.

Last year we started along the Dordogne at Libourne and followed the River into the Auvergne, we went end of June, had very good weather apart from a couple of Thunderstorms but that cleared the air for a while. Found some superb camp sites, we were the only people on one site on Bastille day all the facilites plus small lake, about 5euro, its on our visit again list.

we always did the two centre holiday when the kids where young. the Vendee or further south on Bordeaux coast would be a good combination with the Dordogne IMO and one we have done in the past :-D

Yes Ile de Re. very good. Locals are worried about the hordes of tourists in the summer. Even the 16.50euro toll on the bridge isn't keeping them out. They have had storm damage this last weekend. The bridge will paid for in 2012 and may be free or they may retain a toll to pay towards environment. Be prepared for traffic hold-ups on the bridge at weekends.

We liked a place called Chatelaillon Plage, just south of La Rochelle and righ on the coast. It has a nice beach and the town is very pleasant witha daily market etc. The site we stayed at, Camping Port Punay, is a really nice site with everything you could wish for. It is also an ACSI site, (page 992, 2010 version), with discounts between !st May to 6th of July. (www.camping-port-punay.com for more info).
