Talbot Express/Ducato/C25 with sloppy Gearlever ?

Hi out there,

Stirring the pot in the van they say. Another name for changing the gears on an Express, etc., gearbox.

Yes I've got that problem on mine but not too bad after tightening the clevis pin on the gearbox ouput shaft to operating lever with the balljoints attached.

Just brousing E-Bay when out pops an answer to releaving the play in the vertical output shaft from the gearbox.

The shaft exites out the top of the gearbox via a screwed in collar and this collar is where a lot of slop is present.

I was thinking in getting this collar bushed so it was a nice running fit on the shaft so getting rid of the slop.

But per the E-Bay ad under "Talbot Express/Fiat Ducato/C25 Gearbox Bush O-Ring" there's an "O" ring in this collar/bush/ that if renewed by a thicker ring it removes slop.

Well worth a try, but never knew there was an "O" in this collar. I've got boxes of assorted "O" rings in my stock, different thicknesses too.

PS. not being a skinflint but Aldi sells these "O" ring boxes now and again.

See E-Bay ad for picture of gearbox output shaft and linkage if you don't understand my lingo.

Anybody not mechanically minded will fry their brains, so be warned and don't look see.

Nice to know you all.

Gordy..

Nice idea that gets you thinking.

Hi,

About 3 or 4 years ago, a certain Talbot/FIAT specialist charged circa £200 to fix this problem properly. It might be worth getting clutch changed at same time .... if they take the gearbox out to do the job.

I sold my Talbot, cringed as a potential buyer was road testing it. He changed gear like the Karate Kid .... or at least, he tried to. He didn't buy.

Hi pkc,

I know of Delfin Designs but what I'm trying to point out is the slop in the gearchange is simply caused by an "O" ring that you can see in the Delfin Designs picture of the input shaft bush/collar.

I'm prepared to spend £'s on an "O" ring but not £50 + p/p on a bush /collar that I've already got.

I think I would prefer a nice running fit bush to remove the slop and not an "O" ring. I just can't believe that an "O" is the answer. Changing the "O" ring will be the only way to tell.

We're coming or in a situation now that we are having to tighten our spending so are having to look to cheaper means. Some businesses will go down but like supermarkets that don't sell Motorhome parts they are flourishing.

Would like to retire and set off into the sunset in the Motorhome but the next goverment coming up might scupper that.

Gordon,

I too have a Talbot of 1988 vintage, (talk about being a masochist !!) anyway this guy sells the 'O' ring you are looking for and gives a lot of very useful information for free too well worth putting into your 'Favorites' :http://www.jktowers.fsnet.co.uk/motorhome/index.htm

I always check Steve's site before looking elsewhere.

Ray ;-)
