Guest Tracker Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 With Nissan about to launch the all electric battery only powered Leaf next year and Renault and Mini close on their heels what does the future hold for screwing motorists? With duty and vat at about 80% of the cost of fuel it does not take a genius to calculate that if every new electric car covers 10000 miles a year without using fuel at, say, 40 mpg then the government will lose out by at least £1000 per car per year - not to mention the £5000 subsidy being offereed as an incentive to buy the car and zero VED. There is little doubt that any government, let alone a cash strapped government of the next decade, is not going to want to lose out to potentially than much easy cashflow so how will they replace it? Road pricing? Any other viable solutions?
malc d Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 You're right Tracker. The tax on fuel will be lost, the same way as the tax was lost on cigarettes. Have to be made up somewhere. I suppose they could always legalise drugs on a temporary basis, charge 120% VAT on the sale of the 'nasty' drugs, and then make them illegal again when we're out of debt. ....have you any ideas for more new sources of revenue ? (They're already thinking about road pricing). *-)
Guest Tracker Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 Perhaps just as the government charges vat on bottled water they could abolish all mains water supplies and raise more tax that way? Maybe they should be filling plastic bags with air to breath and selling that too - plus vat of course?
pkc Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 Drug tax? Cool idea! £. s. d. from LSD? Wow! far out man. Note for the do good lobby..This was vas a joke. I do not use or condone the use of drugs, Why would I? I'm drunk most of the time. Regards, PKC.
nowtelse2do Posted May 1, 2010 Posted May 1, 2010 Richard, didn't know whether to post on the election thread or on this one, so decided I would post on here as it will boost your ratings up:-D Now I will get to the point(s). Nick Clegg says his party (the Liberals) will axe road tax and fuel duty and replace it with......(now I know you are in favour of this along with Dave Newell and others) a 12p per km tax. So in one sweep Nick as raised it to 16.8p a mile, 1km = 5/8 th's of a mile. A road tax rise even before he thinks he's a Prime Minister. Now, my maths was never my strong point but my generosity was, that's why I've been bankrupt twice so I will loosely give some figures and I know you mathematicians out there will correct them I sure. Manchester to Dover abt 270 miles = £45 (don't forget the return trip, that now = £90) + fuel at say today's average of £1.20p per Lt, 4.546 Lt = 1 gall, so 1 gall = £5.455p inc the vat. The government takes roughly 80% of that which leaves you paying abt £1.10p per gall (National Benzole days) Were the olden days better? I ask myself :-D so 9gall to Dover = £9.90p + return makes £19.80p on top of £90 is £1098.00p, awe..!! come on just joking, £109.80p total. Cost at the moment should work out at abt £98 so Nicks government would get abt 12quid extra. What you have to remember is to get back to Dover from Calais on fumes and fill up in Dover....!!!! never thought I would say that :D (Hope these figures are right) Talking about immigration, (!) :-D we need another 30,000,000 working immigrants here doing our jobs and paying their taxes, then we Brits can live on the social, I think that's fair, don't you.Just might rethink my voting preferenceDave
