We are off on our next M/H trip to Europe in a couple of weeks, although not many fixed plans one thing we are doing is a traverse of the Pyrenees from Altlantic to the Med. Any suggestions for 'must see' area's, towns/villages, campsites, aires etc would be much appreciated.

We often use the D934 North/south road and that in its self is quite interesting with good views, stopping places and small villages but on one occasion I turned East onto the D918 from Eaux Bonnes to Lourdes. We were in a 6M low profile van at the time and would not :'( do it in anything larger and my co-pilot said "Never ***** again" but it is quite spectacular to say the least. When you come down on the lourdes side there are plenty of sites.

In the past we have tried staying Jaca but the sites we found were very poor, however there are a couple of nice sites near Biescas.

Village of Gavarnie ( and Cirque de Gavarnie ) on the French side and/or Ordesa Gorge on the Spanish side. In Ordesa National Park.

If you are in to walking it would be the Ordesa Gorge for me.

We did this route about 3 weeks ago, from Cabbreton to Perpignan. We stayed in a lovely site at Oust, just to the east of St Girons and then went over the Col de Port (on the D618)...amazing view from the Col where there is a biggish expanse of car park to have your lunch overlooking snow capped mountains as far as the eye could see. (The mountains are impressive, but they do , as they say, block the view). The Missus thought the road up to the Col was a bit scary but it was OK, .......as long as you stay on it.

We stayed the next night in Tarascon sur Ariege.....a small Pyrenean town, used to be an escape route to Spain for downed allied aviators. Amazing trip altogether ...many high points.....try to fit in Carcassone and the Gorges du Tarn if you are heading North again at some stage.

You should at least look at the little yellow train, but riding on it is amazing, open carriages with hard wooden seats, just google petit traine jaune.

Col de Tourmalet (imagine going over on a bike (bicycle) and the Observatory

Gavarnie, La Breche de Roland both worth a walk, Gavarnie village can be a bit smelly (donkeys or used to be)

Lourdes whether you believe or not, the belief of others can be strangely moving, the tacky gift shops are not!

There was a site in the village of Torla a couple of miles away from the gorge. Site was alongside a hotel.

Out of the main season you can drive up to the gorge, to a large car park which is situated at the start of the gorge.

When we went once in late June ( I think it was) vehicles were not allowed up into the gorge, people were all bussed in from the village.

This info is a few years old ( 4 -5 ?) now so may be worth Googling for up to date info.

We've been twice - enjoyed the walks and the views so much would like to go again. Mind you we had excellent weather on both occasions.

p.s. Just Googled 'camping Torla' and found two or three sites.
