Maggst88 Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Hi all - I am a new user of a secondhand motorhome with a thetford cassette. You are going to think I am a bit dense but where do all the liquids go in the cassette. I realise that the pink goes into the bowl as a rinse but where do the green and blue go and are there any products better than these Aqua Kem products. Many thanks. Any help appreciated.
Guest Tracker Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 Hi Maggs and welcome to the madhouse. Thetford have a website with some info on it and the pink and blue liquid bottles have instructions for use and quantities. If the flushing is from it's own built in header tank you can use Pink but if flushing water is drawn from the main fresh water tank you can't. Flushing tanks are generally about 10 to 12 litres or so and quantities are not critical and can be guessed. Waste holding tanks - the lower removable part - are generally about 15 litres give or take, depending on model, and we find that a slight overdose of about 150ml works best at helping to negate nauseous niffs especially when the cassette is nearly full. THere are many other chemicals mostly a lot cheaper but I have given up using them because generally they don't work as well and in some cases they can damage the rubber seals. Replacing them is something of a sh1tty job! Other people like the cheaper ones and have no problems so you takes yer choice? If you are only using the van for the occasional holiday then the cost of the Thetford liquids is less of an issue that when long term using the van. Don't bother with Thetford 'special' bum paper - use the same one you use at home and save a packet! Be aware that with a change of altitude pressure or vacuum can build up in the cassette and to release it prior to spraying the contents everywhere press the little button on the top of the cassette - making sure to tilt it slightly so that 'contents' are not in contact with the valve - unless you want a quick spraying!
neilmac Posted May 3, 2010 Posted May 3, 2010 As above, plus we have been using Sainsburys cheapest Bio washing liquid in the cassette instead of Thetford's finest. Half a cassette capful per use and it works a treat B-)

The green or blue chemicals go into the waste holding tank. You normally put about one or two litres of water in the tank and mix it with the chemicals, before using. The blue and the green do the same job but there are some camp sites that will not accept the blue chemicals being dumped into their systems. I understand that is when the waste system depends on micro-organisms to 'eliminate' the waste, ( i.e. the site may not be on a mains drainage system). Green chemicals are apparently micro-organism friendly.
