slackhouse Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Hi - I am thinking about buying a Ubisurfer Netbook but the reviews I read vary from 5* great to 1* Cr**p. Has anyone had experience of one of these devices.
Basil Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Hi, my advice would be don't!! Not had full experience of the 'Ubisurfer', just tried one in the hope it was better than what I had, but I do know that it uses the same platform as the earlier 'Pocketsurfer 2B'. I have one of those and I would not recommend you getting one or the 'Ubisurfer' as you will find it painfully slow and on some occasions totally ineffective. The principle seems good but it is working on the old GPRS network and uses compressed pages off of a remote server in Canada which further slows the process (to a standstill at times) though reduces the data to make transmision quicker. Compared to a proper Netbook with a high speed dongle the Ubiserfer is IMO, 0* worse than Cr**p. Sorry if that is not what you want to hear! Bas P.S. By the way the other disadvantage is when you find it is a load of rubbish it ends up in its box in the corner useless for any other use and a waste of £150.
slackhouse Posted May 4, 2010 Author Posted May 4, 2010 Thanks Bas - Just confirmed why the 1* ratings.
Bazza454 Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Peter, Bas is absolutely right, the Ubisurfer is a pile of junk. Best add a few pounds and get something like this -http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.207-7794.aspx
flicka Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Hi Peter I must endorse the comments from Basil & Bazza. Expensive to buy (for what it is) & connection is extremely poor or Busy. Mine finished up in the bin as I knew I would have post sale agro if I sold it.
lennyhb Posted May 5, 2010 Posted May 5, 2010 I think it is the same as the 'Pocketsurfer' best advice is keep well away. They use normal GPRS phone network and every time you call up a web page it is first routed to their server in Canada then the data is compressed and sent over the mobile phone network. Not all sites will work using their compression & some are barred by their network. Also if they go bust you have an expensive door stop.
