Ford Transit Rear wheel drive based Motorhomes

Recommended Posts

Mornin' all. Am looking to change my motorhome soon and am enthused by the 140hp 2.4 tdci transit base vehicle. What bodybuilders use this chassis?and does anyone have one that they would like to comment on?. I'm specifically looking for a 2 berth with 2 rear single beds over good sized garage and preferably automatic transmission if it's available although this is not imperative.New or second hand.Hope someone can help! Thanks Atto

There is an auto on the MK6 Transit (actually an automated manual box), so that would mean buying second-hand.

I do not know of any vans that meet your exact spec, but one of the specialist builders could run something up for you as a one-off.

I suggest a look at the likes of Nu Venture at:

http://www.nuventure.co.uk/ and maybe give them a call.

Hi, We have the Roller team 600G, not sure why you want singles up the back ours has fixed double but can fit 3 easily on the front over head and have done many times. 2 30 year olds and a 10 year old and they had stacks of room.

Got twin rear wheel and large garage, not automatic though.

The CI cipro is the twin rear bed with garage and alot of automatics in it, but not on a Ford I don't think.

My van is Transit Mk7 RWD/2.4-140 engine, alas AutoSleepers dont manufacture the Windsor, Wilton anymore.

Its a great engine and motor to drive IMO better than the Sevel chassied vans. One of the Northern Dealers had an Auto Windsor for sale recently, cant remember who it was though.

Good analysis, Dave, and good choices!  However, so far as I can tell, there are currently no European manufacturers offering what you want.  There are a few (CI, Autoroller and Rimor) offering Luton bodied vans on the RWD Ford chassis, none I could find with low profiles, and none with single beds.  FWD chassis gets to the layout you want from Hymer, Eriba (Hymer clone for the French market),and Hobby.

Ford seem to have dropped right out of favour with either the Sevel trio, or Mercedes dominant.  There are a few on Iveco, mainly larger vans, or specialist converters using the 4x4 chassis.  Don't know what Ford did to the converters to persuade then to drop Transits in favour of irreversible Sevels, but it must have been bad.

Maybe next year, with the new Renault master?

Dave Attridge - 2010-05-06 7:54 PM Hi Janet.My hero.You've cracked it for me!!.Many thanks.Dave.

So she has!  Missed it!  Part of Hymer group.  TEC FreeTEC 708G or GK, 7.4 metres long low profile.  You'll need the 3,850kg chassis, though, only 370kg payload plated at 3,500kg.  Watch that the standard (Germany) offer is 115PS engine, and not 140PS.

Lowdham don't list them at present, though, and nor does anyone else I can find in UK!

I agree, Eddie, it's very nice!

But, I can't really see the point of the sliding beds, it has only 500kg payload, and the basic version comes with the 115 PS engine at (list) 55,800 Euros!

Besides, ahem, it seems you're now hankering for a triple bed?  My, er, regards to Mrs Mental.  Good thing you kept the sunglasses on!  :-D

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi, we have the 2.4Tdi FreeTec 688TI LP on a ford double wheel rear axle and it is brilliant, really nice to drive and not bad fuel consumption.

we bought it from lowdhams 4 weeks ago, we looked at all the FreeTecs they had including the two singles over the garage but we went for the fixed double over the massive garage, people did mention to me the payload but the 390Kg is fine for me and the wife to go the lakes or france for a week.

The fixture and fittings are of a much higher spec than any of the 100+ motorhomes we looked at over the last year and we pretty much decided as soon as we saw it that it was the one for us.

we recieved excellent service from lowdhams in particular Paul soal (no relation or friend).

Very happy with it and can highly recomend the FreeTec.
